Italian wine producers have made one blunder after another pushing prices of their wines to a level where they are no longer considered a feasible alternative for thrifty American wine consumers. Most Chiantis now cost in excess of $10 a bottle so I was shocked to find this gorgeous wine from one of Tuscany's most renowned producers priced at $7 a bottle. The fact that the 1988 vintage is a fine one in Tuscany is revealed in the ripeness of this wine. Even more enticing is its complex berry herb earth and leather-scented nose rich medium to full-bodied flavors and long finish. There are enough soft tannins and acidity to provide easy-going drinking for at least 4-5 years. Italian wine lovers should consider buying this terrific Chianti by the case.
