I was highly critical of the 1995 vintage at Domaine de Comte de Vogüé when the wines were young, but the wines have aged far better than I ever imagined possible out of the blocks and I seriously underestimated these wines. The 1995 Bonnes-Mares offers up a lovely, musky bouquet of red and black cherries, vinesmoke, a complex base of soil tones, mustard seed, gamebirds and a discreet base of vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and very elegant in profile, with superb complexity, a lovely core of fruit, melting tannin and lovely length and grip on the poised and classy finish. A really lovely 1995 red Burgundy!

(91-94 points) Medium-to-dark ruby colored, the spectacularly aromatic Bonnes Mares explodes out of the glass with spiced apples, dark cherries and cola scents. Chewy, powerful, polished and intensely structured, this full-bodied wine is packed with wild berries, plums and red fruits. Drink 2003-2012+. This note is the result of tastings I did in Burgundy between January 7 and January 29. The wine was tasted from cask, not bottle. Pinot Noir, a fragile varietal, reacts poorly to fining, filtration, and careless bottling techniques, I recommend caution when considering buying a red burgundy based on cask samples. I called it as I tasted it, and hope the bottled wine reflects the quality of the samples I was provided.- PR

Deeper-pitched aromas of blue fruits, clove, mint and coffee; much more Morey in character than the other wines of this domain, despite the fact that this holding of 2.7 hectares is in the southeast corner (i.e., Chambolle side) of the appellation, next to Fuees. Powerful, penetrating and very closed, with a mineral firmness. Noble tannins coat the entire mouth. Silky, beautiful and full-bodied, this is a rich and racy red Burgundy packed with intense blackberry, cassis and wet earth character that cascades to a very long, succulent finish. More fat and flesh in this wine than in most '95s. Try after 2002, once the firm tannins settle down. 500 cases made.
