Vinous, April 2022

The 1995 Haut-Bailly is quite deep in colour. It has a gorgeous bouquet with blackberry, incense and touches of melted dark chocolate. Hints of menthol develop with aeration. The palate is very well defined with ample...

Wine Spectator, January 1998

A chewy burly wine for aging. Big Haut-Bailly. Vivid berry and grape aromas. Full-bodied and tough with masses of tannins and a long wet earth and fruit aftertaste. Best after 2001.

jebdunnuck.com, April 2020

A classy, regal wine that’s all about complexity and elegance, the 1995 is fully mature, with a ruby/amber hue and ripe, sweet aromas of currants, cedarwood, unsmoked tobacco, smoked earth, and exotic spices...

TheWineCellarInsider.com, June 2016

A little more interesting on the nose, with its tobacco, tar, cigar box, forest floor and cherry notes, than on the medium bodied, refined, but slightly stoic palate. Still, this is quite a charmer and is drinking great...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, February 1998

A beauty, this deep ruby-colored wine offers a classic, smoky, cherry, red and black currant-scented nose, sweet, lush, forward fruit, medium body, true delicacy and elegance (as opposed to thinness and dilution), perfect...

Chateau Haut-Bailly, an esteemed Cru Classé de Graves, lies in a 30 hectare (74 acres) vineyard near the center of the region. On the left bank of the river Garonne, it is positioned on a high sandy ridge mixed with gravel, atop a layer of sandstone and fossil shell remains. This terroir gives Haut Bailly wines distinctive character and refinement.

The property featured vines in 1461 or earlier, and from 1530s one could see a focused wine estate taking shape. That estate changed hands over the centuries and was handed down from generation to generation, each leaving their stamp. Today, Chateau Haut Bailly is owned by Robert G. Wilmers, an American businessman devoted to Bordeaux Grands Crus. His stewardship and investment has brought Haut Bailly to new heights but all in keeping with the estates strong heritage.

The long heritage of Chateau Haut Bailly is represented by 4 hectares of own-rooted, century-old vines. The remainder of the vineyard, on carefully selected rootstock, is Cabernet Sauvignon focused with 34% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, and 3% Petit Verdot available to create complex, well-rounded wines.

Chateau Haut-Bailly, says Robert Parker Jr., “is a wine of undeniable finesse, elegance and restraint.” Marked by sophistication and supple tannins, historically—like most top-quality Bordeaux—it has been at its finest after some years of bottle age.

However, in recent years, the wines are increasingly attractive in their youth. This does not seem to affect the age-worthiness of the wine. It merely broadens the timespan for enjoyment. Indeed, steady improvements in winemaking and viticulture are raising overall quality to new levels.

The 1995 Haut Bailly is a red Bordeaux Blend that hails from the renowned region of Pessac Leognan in Bordeaux, France. This wine exudes elegance and complexity, making it a true gem for connoisseurs. With its beautiful ruby color, it catches the eye and invites anticipation for what awaits within the bottle.

On the nose, the 1995 Haut Bailly offers a symphony of aromas. Sweet berry notes blend with spicy undertones, creating a captivating and alluring perfume. As the wine opens up, additional layers of cedarwood, unsmoked tobacco, smoked earth, and exotic spices emerge, adding a touch of sophistication.

Upon tasting, this wine reveals itself to be medium-bodied and well-balanced. The tannins are moderate yet firm, suggesting that it still has some aging potential. The texture is wonderfully resolved, offering a seamless and velvety mouthfeel. The palate is dominated by ripe currants, accompanied by hints of blackberry and grape. The flavors are complemented by a touch of wet earth, adding depth and complexity to the wine's profile.

The 1995 Haut Bailly has received high praise from esteemed wine critics. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate awarded it 88 points, noting its elegance and ability to age beautifully. Wine Spectator gave it an impressive 92 points, describing it as a chewy and burly wine with a long, earthy aftertaste. Jeb Dunnuck awarded it 91 points, highlighting its regal nature and seamless texture. Vinous also rated it 92 points, praising its deep color, well-defined palate, and delicious black fruit flavors.

As a wine expert, I highly recommend experiencing the 1995 Haut Bailly. It is a wine that has reached its peak and is now fully mature, offering a captivating journey for the senses. Whether enjoyed now or aged further, this wine promises to deliver a memorable experience that showcases the timeless beauty of Bordeaux.
