jamessuckling.com, September 2022

A very classy Unico with tight, fine-grained tannins. Savory tar and dried leaves mingle with blackcurrant and wild blackberry, alongside hints of dried oregano. So refined and driven. You can feel the cabernet character...

Jancis Robinson's Purple Pages, June 2012

Dark purplish crimson. Actually this smells more obviously ripe and opulent than the 2005, perhaps because of its seductive and already complex undertow. Beautiful completeness. So beautifully balanced that it is already...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, February 2023

The 2004 Único magnum was a revelation. It's very fine, elegant and balanced, starting to show more tertiary notes and the Vega Sicilia perfume. It's medium to full-bodied with a fine thread and very good balance. You can...

Wine Enthusiast, May 2015

Lightly baked and hinting at raisin and fine herbs, the bouquet on this benchmark Spanish red enfolds aromas of tobacco, moss and ripe tomato. In the mouth, it’s elegant and silky but also full and expansive. Flavors of...

Decanter,

Recommended by Jasper Morris MW for a tasting we held together, this just jumped out of the glass. I am giving a drinking date from now, as it is getting on towards 17 years old, but it is still extremely young and has...

Wine Spectator, October 2014

This expressive red shows lacy notes of floral, cedar, tobacco, spice and orange peel that mingle in a lean, firm texture and linger on the long, spicy finish. Delivers backbone and grace, in a traditional style. Drink...

Unico is Vega Sicilia’s flagship wine, made from varying proportions of Tempranillo and Cabernet Sauvignon. Each provides a differentiating factor that makes the wine great in every vintage.

Unico remains true to a clear and well-defined style, with an inimitable character, elegance, and strength. It has a unique and timeless quality that has elevated it among the aristocracy of the great classic wines. Infinitely complex, the wine is silky and elegant, with an aging capacity that only a handful of wines in the world can claim.

The 2004 Vega Sicilia Unico is a highly acclaimed red wine from the Ribera Del Duero region in Castilla y Leon, Spain. Produced by the esteemed Vega Sicilia winery, this proprietary blend predominantly features Tempranillo with a notable 13% Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine boasts an alcohol content of 14.0% and is sealed with a traditional cork closure.

Jancis Robinson awarded this wine a near-perfect score of 98, describing it as "dark purplish crimson" with an "opulent" aroma and a "beautifully balanced" palate. Robinson highlighted the wine's "seductive and already complex undertow" and its "mineral finish," describing it as "really stunning – explosive!"

Wine Spectator provided a slightly lower score of 94 but still found much to admire. Reviewer TM described the wine as "expressive" with "lacy notes of floral, cedar, tobacco, spice and orange peel." TM highlighted the wine's "lean, firm texture" and "long, spicy finish," recommending it for drinking through 2024.

Wine Enthusiast, awarding another excellent score of 98, praised the wine's "elegant and silky" mouthfeel, noting flavors of "baked berry fruits, baking spices, herbs and cocoa." The review emphasized the wine's complexity and potential for aging well through 2035.

Jamie Goode, writing for Wineanorak, gave the wine a score of 94, describing it as "rich, sweet, powerful and intense" with "lovely sweet berry fruits" and notes of "herbs, vanilla and coconut." Goode found the palate to be "structured" with a "very sweet fruit profile" and some evident wood.

Decanter's review, scored at 97, highlighted the wine's ability to "jump out of the glass" with "bright black cherry and brambled autumnal fruits." The review praised its "voluptuous, powerful, layered, complex" profile, with hints of "toast, tar, chocolate shavings and smoke."

Lastly, James Suckling, also giving a score of 98, noted the wine's "tight, fine-grained tannins" and complex flavors of "savory tar and dried leaves" mingling with "blackcurrant and wild blackberry." Suckling highlighted the wine's refined nature and its potential for long-term aging.
