Decanter, June 2016

Tight and unyielding at the moment, but with great pedigree, great texture and definition, this has lots of life to come. Poised and impactful, with juicy and mouthwatering fruit. Punches far above the weight of the...

TheWineCellarInsider.com, May 2016

Still dark, the color has barely moved from its youthful inky hue. Licorice, espresso, smoke, tobacco, truffle, plums, cocoa, and blackberry aromas resonate. Full bodied and packed with deep, ripe, fruit, the tannins...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, May 2016

Tasted at Bordeaux Index's annual 10-Year On tasting in London. The 2006 Château Pontet-Canet has an extremely pure, vivacious, perfumed bouquet with crushed violets infusing the blueberry and blackberry fruit. But it is...

This red is now soft and fruity with plum, berry and mineral character. It’s full-bodied with fine tannins and a gorgeous finish. Drink or hold.

Blackberry currant and plum tart aromas lead to a full body with a solid core of fruit sweet fruit and silky tannins. Generous and round with lovely richness for the vintage. Best after 2014. 23330 cases made.

Wine Enthusiast, March 2009

At this early stage in its development, this wine shows more structure than richness. The tannins are fully developed, dark and dense. The complexity is there, but the fruit and the elegance are still to come—and that...

Chateau Pontet-Canet is a Fifth Growth Bordeaux wine estate owned by the Tesseron family (of Cognac fame) since 1975. The estate is a rarity in the Medoc, having known only three owners over a course of three centuries.

The vineyard spans 81 hectares in Pauillac, atop an outcropping of Garonne gravel over limestone. After a first trial in 2004, which took place on 14 hectares, Pontet-Canet fully converted the estate to biodynamic agriculture. They obtained organic certification from Ecocert, biodynamic certification from Biodyvin in 2010, and from Demeter in 2014.

Alfred Tesseron uses horses to plow the vineyards of Pontet Canet since they are gentler and lighter than tractors. Because the horses never step in the same place twice, the soils are always aerated in different parts, bringing much needed oxygen to the soil.

The vines have an average age of 40 to 45 years. Their varietal plantings are Cabernet Sauvignon (62%), Merlot (32%), Cabernet Franc (4%) and three parcels of Petit Verdot (2%).

Chateau Pontet-Canet is bright and brilliant with full-bodied fruit, yet finesse, in the mouth. It expresses energy, tension and intensity.

The fruit is fermented with native yeast in semi-conical concrete tanks that facilitate punch-downs. The wine then macerates for an additional four weeks before being removed from the pomace for maturation. One-third of the wine is aged in large, concrete amphorae, designed expressly for Pontet-Canet. The rest ages in French oak barrels.

Introducing the 2006 Pontet-Canet, a Bordeaux Blend from the esteemed Pauillac region of Bordeaux, France. This wine exudes elegance and sophistication, showcasing the unique terroir of its origin. With a deep red color that hints at its intensity, this wine is a true gem in the world of Bordeaux.

On the nose, the 2006 Pontet-Canet displays enticing aromas of blackberry, currant, and plum tart. These fruity notes are accompanied by hints of cedar and graphite, adding complexity and depth to the bouquet. Upon first sip, the wine reveals a full-bodied nature with a solid core of sweet fruit and silky tannins. The generous and round character of this wine is truly exceptional, especially considering the vintage. With lovely richness and balance, this wine is sure to impress even the most discerning palates.

Renowned wine critic Neal Martin describes the 2006 Pontet-Canet as having a "seriously good backbone" and "real structure." The palate showcases beguiling symmetry and a long, grippy finish, indicating that this wine has immense aging potential. Martin suggests that long-term ageing is not an option but a rule for this exceptional vintage.

Other critics have also praised the 2006 Pontet-Canet. Wine Spectator awarded it an impressive score of 93, highlighting its solid core of fruit and silky tannins. James Suckling commends this wine for its soft and fruity nature, accompanied by fine tannins and a gorgeous finish. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate gives it a score of 94, praising its pure, perfumed bouquet and medium-bodied palate.

Overall, the 2006 Pontet-Canet is a wine that exudes class and finesse. Its complexity, balance, and aging potential make it a true collector's item. Whether enjoyed now or laid down for future enjoyment, this wine is sure to impress with its exceptional quality and undeniable charm.
