Wine Enthusiast, April 2013
Winemaker Elisabetta Geppetti is a beautiful and dynamic woman, with a firm grasp on Sangiovese and Scansano. Her riserva offers ripe fruit, wonderful softness and hints of wild brush and scrub oak in the background.

A wine with ripe and juicy fruit with dried dark fruits and hints of toasted oak and walnuts. Full body, with velvety tannins and a fruity finish. Delicious wine. Drink now or hold.

The 2008 Poggio Valente is without question one of the successes of the vintage. Dark cherries, leather, licorice and tobacco are some of the notes that take shape in the glass as this cool, vibrant wine reveals its impeccable, refined personality. This mid-weight Poggio Valente reflects the cool nature of the year in a beautifully balanced, harmonious style. The 2008 Poggio Valente is 97% Sangiovese and 3% Merlot that spent 15 months in French oak barrels, 40% new and 60% 2 year-old.

Aromas of black cherry, licorice, dried flowers and cigar box present themselves in a fairly restrained style, accompanied by subtle notes of mint and wild herbs. Racy acidity and firm tannins nicely balance the fruit in a style typical of this cool vintage. Primarily Sangiovese, this is showing beautifully now and should drink well for another 6-8 years.

Fattoria Le Pupille

Fattoria Le Pupille, located in the Maremma region of Tuscany, is a leading winery owned by Elisabetta Geppetti, the Ambassador of Maremma and called the Lady of Morellino. As a young student, Elisabetta had foreseen great productive potential in the countryside she loved, and armed with her enthusiasm and love of wine which she inherited from her grandfather, she embarked on a journey to transform her family’s small wine estate into what it is today: 175+ acres of vineyards, more than 500,000 bottles made every year and presence in the markets of four continents.

The core of the property is around the village of Pereta surrounded by 65 acres of vineyard that include 12 acres which give life to the winery’s legendary wine: Saffredi. With the support of Italian wine legend Giacomo Tachis, she replanted Cabernet Sauvignon on a few vines of Sangiovese, which in 1985 started bearing fruit, giving birth to a project that has made the winery the true pioneer of Maremma.

The operating nucleus of the property, from early 2000, is in proximity of Istia d’Ombrone near Grosseto. The winery is an antique farmhouse surrounded by a 30-acre vineyard, including a small patch dedicated to Sangiovese grapes coming from ancient vine rows.

The Le Pupille vineyards are planted to 70% Sangiovese, 10% Malvasia Nera and Alicante, 4% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Merlot, 2% Syrah and 2% Cabernet Franc. There are 23 acres of vineyards for the white grape varieties: Traminer, Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon.
