Vinous, November 2021

Champagne Billecart-Salmon is an independent and family-owned champagne house situated in the charming village of Mareuil-sur-Ay in the heart of Champagne. It was founded in 1818 after the marriage of Nicolas Francois Billecart and Elisabeth Salmon.

Since then, for almost 200 years, every member of the Billecart family has continued to stand by their oath of giving priority to quality and striving for excellence. Today, the 6th generation is represented by Francois and Antoine Roland-Billecart, who lead this independent house with the support of their father, Jean Roland-Billecart. The firm owns 74 acres of its own vines and purchases grapes from growers comprising another 346 acres. Ninety percent of the fruit for Billecart comes from 40 crus within a 20-mile radius of Epernay.

The Billecart portfolio includes the Brut Reserve, Brut Rose, Extra Brut, Demi-Sec, Brut Sous Bois, Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru, Cuvée Nicolas François Billecart, and the ultimate expression for the House, the vintage Le Clos Saint Hilaire, a blanc de noirs Champagne sourced from a tiny plot planted in 1964.

The winery employs sustainable viticulture practices, without the use of pesticides and herbicides, and the wines are aged in oak in Billecart's limestone cellars.

The 2009 Billecart-Salmon Extra Brut is a captivating Champagne blend that embodies elegance and finesse. With a beautiful white color, this wine is a true delight for the senses. The nose is immediately greeted by inviting aromas of crisp stone fruit, yellow apple, brioche, honeycomb, and warm pastry. These enticing scents create an irresistible allure that draws you into the glass.

On the palate, the 2009 Billecart-Salmon Extra Brut is medium to full-bodied, offering a fleshy and enveloping texture that caresses the taste buds. The pillowy mousse adds a luxurious touch, while the generous core of fruit is balanced by bright acids. This wine is seamless and complete, showcasing a charm and persistence that is truly remarkable.

Renowned wine critic Robert Parker's Wine Advocate awarded this vintage an impressive score of 94 points. They noted that the 2009 Extra Brut Vintage is more giving and demonstrative compared to its 2008 counterpart. The low dosage of two grams per liter enhances the wine's richness without making it heavy. Antonio Galloni of Vinous also praised this vintage, describing it as resonant and generous, with all the natural generosity of the year.

The 2009 Billecart-Salmon Extra Brut is a pan-regional blend that incorporates a majority of red grapes, including 40 percent Pinot Noir and 27 percent Meunier. Vinified in stainless steel, this wine maintains its freshness despite aging on the lees for an extended period. Wine & Spirits magazine commended its brisk, cool flavors of lime zest, star fruit, and pear, which are accompanied by a lasting fruit complexity.

As a balanced version, this Champagne offers savory mineral character upfront, with accents of brine, chalk, and smoke. Subtle notes of baked plum, preserved lemon, and beeswax emerge through the creamy midpalate and firm finish. Wine Spectator awarded this vintage a score of 91, highlighting its harmonious nature.

The 2009 Billecart-Salmon Extra Brut is truly a testament to the artistry and dedication of the Billecart-Salmon winery. With its exceptional quality and remarkable balance, this Champagne blend is a must-try for wine enthusiasts seeking a truly memorable experience.
