Composed of 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, and 2% Cabernet Franc, the 2009 Phelan Segur is medium to deep garnet in color. It conjures up the most gorgeous perfume of chocolate-covered cherries, candied violets, and warm cassis, giving way to nuances of tar, underbrush, and licorice. The medium-bodied palate is chock full of juicy black fruits and floral nuances, framed by beautifully ripe, plush tannins and fantastic tension, finishing long and perfumed.

Served blind at the Southwold 2009 tasting. Phelan does it again…served blind it embarrasses not only my previous scores but also its peers in this flight, just as it did in the same place apropos 2005. Here, the 2009 displays more unresolved oak on the nose, although is clearly the fruit concentration to subsume it with time. Perhaps it is glossier, more extrovert than its peers. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins on the entry. It has a very pleasing balance, bags of freshness and vigour with a precise, mineral-rich finish that is convincing.

Deep garnet colored, the 2009 Phélan Ségur leaps from the glass with scents of crème de cassis, molten chocolate, licorice and blueberry compote with touches of cardamom, Morello cherries and dried mint. Medium to full-bodied, the palate reveals beautiful poise with a fine frame of grainy tannins and a refreshing backbone, finishing long and mineral laced. - Lisa Perrotti-Brown

The 2009 Château Phelan Ségur is a big, rich, powerful wine from this terrific Saint-Estèphe. Revealing a ruby/plum color as well as a complex nose of brambly red and black fruits, damp earth, chocolate, graphite, and a touch of truffle, this beauty hits the palate with a layered, full-bodied mouthfeel, ripe, silky tannins, and a big finish. It's in its adolescent years, where its baby fat has just started to melt away, and its picking up more elegance and finesse. Balanced and just impeccably put together, enjoy bottles any time over the coming two decades.

This is fleshy and polished with layers of crushed plum fig sauce and blackberry paste that unfurl slowly backed by maduro tobacco charcoal and iron. There's lots of minerality on the finish but it's nicely enveloped in the fruit. Best from 2013 through 2022.-J.M.

Ready for prime time drinking for the next 15 or more years, the wine is round, medium/full-bodied, earthy, plush and packed with dark black cherries, coffee bean smoke, spice box, cigar wrapper and thyme. Dark purple in color with slight garnet hues the aromas are rich of boysenberry raspberry and spice with candied fruit and jammy notes following. The wine is medium to full bodied with abundant tannins and has a clean mouth feel. This is a tremendous value worth purchasing. Give it another 2-3 years and enjoy over the following 15+ years.
