On the palate, it's full-bodied, layered and muscular, with an ample chassis of structuring dry extract, ripe acids and a long, sapid finish. This cuvée derives its name from the year in which the Philipponnat family settled in Ay, and it's intended to foreground the virtues of the wines of that village. - William Kelley collapse

The style is tight, chalky and linear, the Pinot hitherto deferential to the discrete charm of the minority Chardonnay. Very fine, in both senses of the word, this wine captures the essential purity which Charles places at the stylistic heart of his range. Open-knit and inviting, with impeccable balance, the 2009 1522 has so much to offer. Lemon confit, dried flowers, baked apple and tropical notes from the Chardonnay all meld together in this super-expressive, inviting Champagne. The 1522 is a blend of 40% Pinot Noir from Aÿ, 30% Pinot Noir from Mailly and 30% Chardonnay from Oger, in other words Pinot from the south, Pinot from the north and Chardonnay from the Côte des Blancs, all from Grand Cru villages. Dosage is 4.25 grams per liter. Disgorged: March, 2019. -- Antonio Galloni collapse
