Wine Enthusiast, December 2020

As always, this Pinot Noir-dominated Champagne is a great wine. In this vintage, it is fuller than usual, perhaps less structured—a true reflection of the vintage. Like all releases of this cuvée, the wine will age...
WA 96

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, March 2023

A few years after its disgorgment now, the 2009 Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill has digested its dosage and is beginning to offer up real complexity. Mingling aromas of freshly baked bread, honeycomb, crisp peach, pear and...

Wine Spectator, September 2020

A seamless Champagne, lithe with fresh, finely knit acidity, and showing beautiful integration, with a rich vein of smoky minerality underscoring flavors of black cherry, toast, preserved lemon and pickled ginger. There's...

Decanter, March 2020

Bright and lustrous with playful bubbles and a soft mousse, the wine is immediately beguiling, seductive and more approachable and charming than its immediate forebear (2008). The nose waltzes through the Viennese...

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy, September 2023

The Pinot Noir dominated Winston Churchill is rather steroidal in 2009; aromas of apricot, apple skin, and cocoa are found on the nose. The palate feels mature; honeyed fig and yellow plum aromas are dusted with a toasty...

Pol Roger is one of the oldest and most-distinguished luxury Champagne firms. Based in the heart of Epernay, it was established in 1849 and remains one of the few family-owned, grande-marquee Champagne houses. Five generations have remained loyal to the firm’s essential values of excellence and independence, ensuring that each wine is treated as an impeccable ambassador to their 160 years of history.

Pol Roger has carved out one of the most flattering reputations in the select circle of the leading Champagne brands. A personal favorite of Sir Winston Churchill (who has the firm’s top cuvee named after him), Pol Roger champagne has also been the British Royal Family’s choice over the years.

The house grows more than half its grapes on 89 estate hectares and sources the rest from select growers. Their cellars extend below the Avenue de Champagne for over seven kilometers on two levels. The deeper cellar maintains a lower temperature for the wine to develop finer bubbles.

The Pol Roger portfolio includes a vintage brut, a non-vintage brut, a brut nature, a demi sec, a vintage rose, a blanc de blancs and the Sir Winston Churchill prestige cuvee.

Champagne Pol Roger created their Prestige Cuvee in homage to Sir Winston Churchill, mindful of the qualities that he sought in his champagne : robustness, a full-bodied character and relative maturity. The exact blend is a closely guarded family secret but it is undeniable that the composition would meet with the approval of the man to whom it is dedicated.

Pinot Noir predominates, providing structure, breadth and robustness whilst Chardonnay contributes elegance, finesse and subtlety. Composed exclusively of grapes sourced from Grands Cru Pinot Noir and Chardonnay vineyards, which were already under vine during Churchill's lifetime, Cuvee Sir Winston Churchill is only made in the very best vintages and is always released later than the other vintage-dated Champagnes from Pol Roger, marking Churchill's appreciation for older wines.

This 2009 Pol Roger Winston Churchill Champagne Blend is a true gem from the prestigious Champagne region of France. With its bright and lustrous appearance, playful bubbles, and soft mousse, this wine immediately captivates the senses. It is more approachable and charming than its predecessor, the 2008 vintage.

On the nose, this Champagne gracefully dances through a Viennese patisserie, offering enticing aromas of freshly baked bread and honeycomb. As it ventures into the orchard, the scent of red apples intertwines with citric rigour, drawing the taster in. The ripeness of the vintage translates into a rich and creamy texture, exuding energy and warmth. While dominated by Pinot Noir, its savory notes are destined to take control after the effervescent flush of youth.

With a forward and confident personality, this Champagne is a joy to experience in relative youth. The finish is pure and long-lasting, leaving a lasting impression on the palate. It is a wine that epitomizes elegance and sophistication.

Renowned wine critics have also recognized the excellence of this vintage. Decanter awarded it a score of 93, praising its seductive and beguiling qualities. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate rated it even higher, with a score of 96, noting its real complexity and aging potential. Wine Spectator awarded it 95 points, highlighting its seamless and lithe character. Wine Enthusiast gave it an impressive score of 97, applauding its fullness and magnificence.

This Pol Roger Winston Churchill Champagne Blend is a true testament to the artistry and craftsmanship of one of the most esteemed Champagne producers. With its refined elegance and exceptional quality, it is a wine that deserves a place in any connoisseur's collection. Whether enjoyed now or aged for further development, this Champagne promises a remarkable drinking experience.
