Billecart-Salmon’s Cuvée Nicolas François 2012 is the house’s prestige vintage Champagne, first created in 1964 as a tribute to founder Nicolas François Billecart. It’s built on a 60/40 blend of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from Premier and Grand Cru sites, with about 10% vinified in oak casks. The dosage is notably low at 3.8 g/L (Extra Brut territory), and the wine spent around 10 years on its lees, underscoring the house’s intent for depth and longevity.

Critical reception is strong across the board, with several excellent reviews. James Suckling’s 97-point note calls it “complex” with aromas ranging from “waffle cones” and “vanilla beans” to “apricots and pastry,” and describes a palate that’s “electric… creamy yet structured and focused,” finishing “long and tense.” Wine Advocate (96 points) also rates it as a clear success, highlighting candied lemon, honeysuckle, ripe peach, beeswax and orange zest, and describing it as “full-bodied, ample and enveloping” with “a chalky structure and mouthwatering acidity,” finishing on “a persistent, saline finish” (William Kelley, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate).

Decanter (95 points) emphasizes how the 2012 combines ripeness with restraint, calling it an “admirably frank and fat-free take” on the vintage, with raspberry, pear and candied orange, plus “dried lemon-like maturing Chardonnay,” and early hints of “nutty maturity and brown pastry richness.” Vinous (95 points) finds “gorgeous resonance and texture,” layering “apricot, spice, tangerine oil and lightly honeyed notes” (Antonio Galloni).

Wine Enthusiast’s excellent 96-point review calls it “quietly powerful and precise,” with “fine, persistent perlage” and a “clean saline edge” (Anna-Christina Cabrales). Wine Spectator (93 points) frames it as “sleek and harmonious,” with “chiseled acidity,” pastry and macadamia notes, and a long, mineral finish, recommending drinking “now through 2037.” Disgorgement is reported as May 2023 by Wine Advocate and Vinous, with other sources placing it in spring-summer 2023 or the second half of 2024, depending on the lot.
