Dominus Estate’s 2014 Dominus is the flagship red from the historic, dry-farmed Napanook Vineyard in Yountville, Napa Valley. The blend is led by Cabernet Sauvignon (commonly cited as 86%) with small portions of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. It was aged in 100% French oak, 40% new, and bottled in June 2017; alcohol is listed at 14.5%. Production was limited—about 4,000 to 4,300 cases, depending on the source.
Critical reception is notably strong, with several excellent reviews. James Suckling awarded 98 points, calling it “alluring,” with “loads of dark tobacco aromas with blackcurrants and black olives,” plus “ultra-fine tannins” and “bright acidity on the finish,” adding it is “very approachable now but better in 2021.” Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate scored it 97 and emphasized both richness and detail, describing a “sexy, opulent, layered, multidimensional wine” showing “red and blackcurrant, cedar wood, tobacco leaf, spice box and licorice,” and projecting it will “continue to evolve for 25 or so years.”
Jeb Dunnuck also gave 97, highlighting concentration and classic Cabernet markers—“blackcurrants, unsmoked tobacco, lead pencil, licorice and smoked earth”—with “sweet tannin” and a “great finish,” suggesting it could “evolve for three decades or more.” Wine Spectator’s 96-point blind review underscores the wine’s poise: “gently mulled black currant and black cherry fruit” alongside “menthol, melted licorice and sweet tobacco,” finishing “seriously long,” and drinking well “now through 2038.”
The overall picture is a structured, age-capable Dominus that balances Napa depth with savory complexity. Antonio Galloni (Vinous) later framed it as “finesse more than power,” noting it can seem “a bit hushed today,” with aromatics slightly ahead of the palate—an observation that suggests a wine still settling into its maturity rather than fading.
