TheWineCellarInsider.com, February 2019

Clearly in competition for the best vintage yet, for the red wine of Domaine de Chevalier, this is a beauty! It is hard to decide if it is the silky, elegant, caressing textures, the freshness and purity in the fruit or...

Decanter, December 2018

The nose is a little less open at this stage than some of the others, but it’s clearly hiding layers of complexity. Chevalier suits a year like 2016, when the fruit was able to take its time to ripen. It's notably more...

Wine Enthusiast, May 2019

This elegant wine wears its firm tannic structure lightly. It is densely textured, just starting on its road to maturity. Black-plum and berry fruits give the wine its weight as much as the tannins. It will age well over...

Wine Spectator, March 2019

The core of fruit flavor here is sappy and dense, with lots of kirsch, raspberry pâte de fruit and plum reduction notes, yet this stays fresh and racy overall, with a bright iron spine, flashes of tea and tobacco and a...

Domaine de Chevalier of the Pessac-Leognan appellation is classified as a Grand Cru Classe de Graves. The property belonged to the Ricard family from 1865 until it was purchased by its current owners, the Bernard family, in 1983. It is one of a very few Bordeaux estates to have kept its “domaine” title instead of using the the more popular “chateau” designation.

The estate covers a hundred hectares, of which 45 are under vine: 40 for the property’s red wines, and 5 for its whites. The vineyards are planted with 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, and 3% Petit Verdot for the red wines, and 70% Sauvignon Blanc and 30% Semillon for the white wines. Soils are dark sand and fine white gravel.

Domaine de Chevalier has been run since acquisition by Olivier Bernard, who perpetuates that spirit of balance and the constant drive for perfection which have been the hallmark of their outstanding wines. The flagship red belongs to the elite of the great classified growths of Bordeaux, while the white is recognized as one of the world’s finest dry wines. The domaine also produces red and white second wines under the Esprit de Chevalier label, which are made from the estate’s young vines.

Olivier Bernard has this to say about his red wines: “Domaine de Chevalier rouge has good structure and a great deal of finesse, complexity, and aging potential – which does not exclude a smooth, fruity quality that makes it enjoyable in its youth. Always balanced, never aggressive, power is by no means the priority...”

Assistant General Manager, Rémi Edange adds: “Chevalier’s red wines are well-structured with round, very fine, tight-knit tannin... They are tremendously elegant and distinguished with a very long aftertaste and more delicacy than power...”

Introducing the 2016 Domaine de Chevalier, a Bordeaux Blend from the renowned Pessac Leognan sub-region of Bordeaux, France. This red wine is a true masterpiece, showcasing the elegance and complexity that can only be found in the finest wines.

In the glass, the wine presents a deep garnet-purple color that is both captivating and alluring. The aromas that rise from the glass are equally enticing, with notes of blackberries, red and dark plums, cedar, and gravel. There is also a delicate hint of red flowers and brown-leaf tea, adding a touch of sophistication to the bouquet.

On the palate, the 2016 Domaine de Chevalier offers a harmonious blend of ripe dark fruit flavors and a plush, focused bed of fresh, fine, and powerful tannins. The texture is dense, yet the wine wears its firm tannic structure lightly, showcasing its elegance and balance. As the wine develops on the palate, it reveals layers of black-plum and berry fruits, supported by a solid frame of grainy tannins. The finish is long and persistent, leaving a lasting impression of restrained earth-laced fruit.

This wine has received high praise from critics, with Wine Spectator awarding it an impressive score of 96 points. They describe the core of fruit flavor as sappy and dense, with notes of kirsch, raspberry pâte de fruit, and plum reduction. The wine remains fresh and racy overall, with a bright iron spine, flashes of tea and tobacco, and a wonderful infusion of alder and tobacco flavors.

With a suggested drinking window from 2024 through 2038, the 2016 Domaine de Chevalier has exceptional aging potential. However, if you cannot resist the temptation to enjoy it now, decanting is recommended to fully appreciate its complexity and depth.

In conclusion, the 2016 Domaine de Chevalier is a wine of exceptional quality and pedigree. It exemplifies the artistry and craftsmanship of its producer, Domaine de Chevalier. Whether you choose to savor it now or cellar it for years to come, this wine is a true gem that will continue to evolve and delight with each sip.
