Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, April 2018

(WA 94-96 points) The 2017 Haut-Bailly is composed of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot. Very deep garnet-purple colored, it has a wonderfully spicy nose of cinnamon stick, cloves...

Grilled caramel notes set against sappy black fruit show classic Haut-Bailly balance, with savoury cassis and bilberry shot through with liquorice root and finely-spun tannins that tiptoe across the palate. Less...

Blackberry, walnut, iodine, and sandalwood aromas follow through to a full body, round and juicy tannins and an intense, flavorful finish. This shows richness with structure. Excellent 2017. Try after 2023.

jebdunnuck.com, October 2023

I continue to believe that the top 2017s from Bordeaux are undervalued in the market: case in point, the 2017 Château Haut-Bailly. This is a gorgeous wine that I think is as good, if not better than the 2000...

A smoky bar around the time of the Third French Republic, alive with the scent of tar, tobacco, the essence of cassis and blackberry aperitifs and other herbal elixirs. Hints of flowers create the complex set of aromatics...

Wine Enthusiast, March 2020

A dry wine firm with dark tannins, this is destined for long aging. Concentration and a solid structure are balanced by the dusty texture and dry core. It will take a while for the potential of the juicy black fruits to...

Vinous, April 2022

The 2017 Haut-Bailly is open and focused on the nose with blackberry and briary, crushed stone and light blueberry scents, still primal but very delineated. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, sappy red berry...

Wine Spectator, March 2020

A bold tarry note coils around the core of plum, black currant and blackberry fruit, while licorice root and bramble details check in on the finish. Packed and grippy, this is a touch rustic in profile at this early stage...

Chateau Haut-Bailly, an esteemed Cru Classé de Graves, lies in a 30 hectare (74 acres) vineyard near the center of the region. On the left bank of the river Garonne, it is positioned on a high sandy ridge mixed with gravel, atop a layer of sandstone and fossil shell remains. This terroir gives Haut Bailly wines distinctive character and refinement.

The property featured vines in 1461 or earlier, and from 1530s one could see a focused wine estate taking shape. That estate changed hands over the centuries and was handed down from generation to generation, each leaving their stamp. Today, Chateau Haut Bailly is owned by Robert G. Wilmers, an American businessman devoted to Bordeaux Grands Crus. His stewardship and investment has brought Haut Bailly to new heights but all in keeping with the estates strong heritage.

The long heritage of Chateau Haut Bailly is represented by 4 hectares of own-rooted, century-old vines. The remainder of the vineyard, on carefully selected rootstock, is Cabernet Sauvignon focused with 34% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, and 3% Petit Verdot available to create complex, well-rounded wines.

Chateau Haut-Bailly, says Robert Parker Jr., “is a wine of undeniable finesse, elegance and restraint.” Marked by sophistication and supple tannins, historically—like most top-quality Bordeaux—it has been at its finest after some years of bottle age.

However, in recent years, the wines are increasingly attractive in their youth. This does not seem to affect the age-worthiness of the wine. It merely broadens the timespan for enjoyment. Indeed, steady improvements in winemaking and viticulture are raising overall quality to new levels.

The 2017 Haut Bailly is a truly exceptional Bordeaux blend that hails from the renowned Pessac Leognan region in Bordeaux, France. With its deep garnet-purple color, this wine immediately captivates the eye. The nose is a sensory journey, reminiscent of a smoky bar during the Third French Republic. The aromas of tar, tobacco, cassis, and blackberry aperitifs fill the air, accompanied by hints of flowers that add complexity to the bouquet. This imaginary Café De La Paix, 1900 transports you to a bygone era.

On the palate, this wine showcases its polish, softness, energy, and remarkable lift. It is bright yet not flashy, displaying a classically styled vintage for the estate. The harmonious blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot, and 4% Cabernet Franc creates a wine of balance and finesse. With an alcohol content of 13.2% and a pH of 3.74, this wine is a testament to the meticulous winemaking process.

Critics have showered this wine with praise, with scores ranging from 93 to 96 points. Jeff Leve of TheWineCellarInsider.com describes it as a wine that will show well early but also possess the ability to age gracefully. James Suckling, from jamessuckling.com, commends its richness, structure, and recommends enjoying it after 2023. Jeb Dunnuck, writing for jebdunnuck.com, compares this vintage to the esteemed 2000 vintage, praising its purity, balance, and elegance. Vinous also praises this wine's open and focused nose, pliant tannins, and sappy red berry fruit.

This wine has received accolades from esteemed publications such as Robert Parker's Wine Advocate and Wine Enthusiast. Lisa Perrotti-Brown of Robert Parker's Wine Advocate commends its wonderful spiciness, freshness, and great finesse. Wine Enthusiast describes it as a dry wine with firm tannins and a solid structure, destined for long aging. Wine Spectator notes its bold tarry note, packed and grippy profile, and suggests it will unwind beautifully with time.

The 2017 Haut Bailly is a wine of exceptional quality and complexity. It is a testament to the craftsmanship and dedication of the Haut Bailly estate. This wine is a must-have for collectors and connoisseurs alike, as it promises to deliver a truly remarkable tasting experience.
