Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, April 2018

(WA 94-96 points) The 2017 Haut-Bailly is composed of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot. Very deep garnet-purple colored, it has a wonderfully spicy nose of cinnamon stick, cloves...

Grilled caramel notes set against sappy black fruit show classic Haut-Bailly balance, with savoury cassis and bilberry shot through with liquorice root and finely-spun tannins that tiptoe across the palate. Less...

Blackberry, walnut, iodine, and sandalwood aromas follow through to a full body, round and juicy tannins and an intense, flavorful finish. This shows richness with structure. Excellent 2017. Try after 2023.

Subtle, welcoming, layered, balanced, this is just so Haut Bailly in its cocoa bean, cassis, smoked capsicum, saffron, cigar and slate feel, with mouthwatering oyster shell signoff. Ready for sharing, but will age for...

jebdunnuck.com, October 2023

I continue to believe that the top 2017s from Bordeaux are undervalued in the market: case in point, the 2017 Château Haut-Bailly. This is a gorgeous wine that I think is as good, if not better than the 2000...

A smoky bar around the time of the Third French Republic, alive with the scent of tar, tobacco, the essence of cassis and blackberry aperitifs and other herbal elixirs. Hints of flowers create the complex set of aromatics...

A dry wine firm with dark tannins, this is destined for long aging. Concentration and a solid structure are balanced by the dusty texture and dry core. It will take a while for the potential of the juicy black fruits to...

The 2017 Haut-Bailly is open and focused on the nose with blackberry and briary, crushed stone and light blueberry scents, still primal but very delineated. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, sappy red berry...

A bold tarry note coils around the core of plum, black currant and blackberry fruit, while licorice root and bramble details check in on the finish. Packed and grippy, this is a touch rustic in profile at this early stage...

Chateau Haut-Bailly, says Robert Parker Jr., “is a wine of undeniable finesse, elegance and restraint.” Marked by sophistication and supple tannins, historically—like most top-quality Bordeaux—it has been at its finest after some years of bottle age.

However, in recent years, the wines are increasingly attractive in their youth. This does not seem to affect the age-worthiness of the wine. It merely broadens the timespan for enjoyment. Indeed, steady improvements in winemaking and viticulture are raising overall quality to new levels.

The 2017 Haut Bailly is a Bordeaux blend from the Pessac Leognan sub-region in Bordeaux, France. Produced by Haut Bailly, this red wine is comprised of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot, and 4% Cabernet Franc, and it features a 13.0% alcohol content. The wine showcases a deep garnet-purple color and is sealed with a traditional cork closure.

Jeff Leve from TheWineCellarInsider.com describes the wine as having "polish, softness, energy and a lot of lift," further noting its complex aromatics reminiscent of a smoky bar during the Third French Republic, with scents of tar, tobacco, cassis, and blackberry. Leve praises this vintage for its classically styled nature, suggesting it will show well early yet has the potential to age gracefully. He rates it 95 points.

James Suckling from jamessuckling.com also awards the 2017 Haut Bailly 95 points, noting its "blackberry, walnut, iodine, and sandalwood aromas" and praising its full body, round and juicy tannins, and an intense, flavorful finish. Suckling highlights its richness and structure, recommending it be tried after 2023.

Jeb Dunnuck from jebdunnuck.com, who is another strong proponent of this wine with a 95-point rating, believes that the top 2017 Bordeaux wines are undervalued. He describes it as "as good, if not better than the 2000," and likens it to the 2014 vintage in terms of purity, balance, and elegance, with classic red and black fruit, smoked tobacco, and cedar pencil notes.

Neal Martin from Vinous rates it 94 points, complimenting its open and focused nose with blackberry, briary, crushed stone, and light blueberry scents. Martin describes the palate as medium-bodied with pliant tannins and sappy red berry fruit, noting its early-drinking potential compared to the 2016 vintage.

Lisa Perrotti-Brown from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate gives it a rating of 94-96 points, highlighting its "spicy nose of cinnamon stick, cloves, anise and fenugreek" along with core notes of roses, warm blueberries, black forest cake, and black raspberries. She appreciates its firm, ripe, grainy tannins and minerally finish.

Roger Voss from Wine Enthusiast scores it 95 points, emphasizing its dry, firm structure and dark tannins, predicting it will need time until 2024 to fully reveal its juicy black fruits. Wine Spectator's JM gives it 93 points, noting its "bold tarry note" and "grippy" profile, suggesting it will unwind with time and be best from 2023 through 2038.

Finally, Decanter's review by an anonymous reviewer also scores it 95 points, praising its "grilled caramel notes set against sappy black fruit," and noting that it's less monolithic than the 2016 or 2018 vintages, indicating it will be ready to drink sooner.

Overall, the 2017 Haut Bailly is highly regarded by multiple reviewers for its balance, elegance, and aging potential.
