Domaine Jean Grivot’s Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru 2019 is a 100% Pinot Noir from Burgundy’s Côte de Nuits, drawn from the famed walled vineyard of Clos de Vougeot. The Grivot family has deep roots here, with one account noting the domaine’s parcel was acquired in 1919. Clos de Vougeot can produce wines that feel weighty if handled without precision, and Grivot is generally known for shaping the site’s natural power into something more controlled.

At its best, this 2019 is being reviewed as a serious, structured Grand Cru built around dark fruit and firm architecture. Wine Spectator’s excellent 95-point review calls it “a dense, muscular red,” led by “dark cherry and blackberry fruit” and layered with “mint, tar, toasty oak, earth, iron and tobacco.” The magazine notes tannins that are “present” but currently cushioned by “bright fruit and fleshy texture,” finishing with a “long, spice- and iron-inflected aftertaste.” Wine Spectator suggests a long window, “Best from 2025 through 2047,” and reports “143 cases imported.”

Decanter (93 points) emphasizes the domaine’s 1.86ha holding in Quatorze Journaux and highlights the warm, dry conditions in 2019, saying the results are “delightful, with bright red fruits and a silky, subtle texture.” Decanter also frames it as “lighter than the offerings from Vosne but also very worthy,” pointing to finesse alongside the underlying grand cru stature.

Other tasters find the wine less settled at the moment. Vinous’ Neal Martin (90 points) reports “quite a lot of new oak on the nose,” plus “some VA that is marring the finish,” concluding it “needs to ‘calm down’.” Jasper Morris (91 points) similarly notes a “tarrily toasty” and “sweaty” edge, though he finds the palate “much more interesting,” citing dark raspberry fruit and “a refreshing line of acidity,” with “potential… if the wine throws off its current more awkward side.”
