I loved the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley, which I think is a step up over the 2018, although both 2019s show a much more elegant profile. Ripe currants, plums, roasted herbs, violets, and incense notes all shine in...

Vinous, February 2023

93+ The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley) is a powerful, tannic wine. In some vintages, the Napa Valley bottling is quite accessible, but not here. Swaths of tannin wrap around a core of dark fruit, gravel, spice...

Dunn Vineyards is a celebrated family-owned and operated estate in Howell Mountain, a subregion of the Napa Valley AVA. In 1979, Randy Dunn and his wife Lori moved with their son Mike into a home on the outskirts of the quiet town of Angwin. While the valley floor inspired farmers to plant vineyards and make wine, Howell Mountain captured Randy’s heart.

From these mountain vineyards, the Dunn family made its mark on the wine industry, and the land in turn made its mark on the family. They now own over 200 acres of land, 35 acres of which are planted to vines - 29 acres to Cabernet Sauvignon, and a small parcel for Mike Dunn’s Petite Sirah, released under the Retro Cellars label. Another 63 forested acres are entrusted to the Napa Valley Land Trust. The Dunn’s continue to produce two of the best regional examples of Cabernet Sauvignon, one from Howell Mountain and one from Napa Valley.

Introducing the 2019 Dunn Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley. This exquisite red wine is a true gem from the renowned Dunn estate in California's North Coast region. With a deep, rich color that glistens in the glass, this wine is a testament to the artistry and dedication of its producer.

On the nose, the 2019 Dunn Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley offers an intoxicating bouquet that immediately captivates the senses. Notes of dark fruit, gravel, spice, dried flowers, and lavender intertwine, creating a complex and alluring aroma. As you delve further, hints of charred earth add depth and intrigue, adding another layer to this already captivating experience.

Upon tasting, this Cabernet Sauvignon reveals its true power and structure. Swaths of tannin wrap around the palate, showcasing the wine's intensity and potential for aging. The firm, chocolatey tannins provide a velvety texture that wraps seamlessly around the core of dark fruit, creating a harmonious and balanced flavor profile. Each sip is a journey through layers of complexity, with the wine evolving and revealing new nuances with every moment.

This 2019 vintage of Dunn Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley is not for the faint of heart. It is a bruiser, a wine that demands attention and respect. While it is powerful and tannic now, it has the potential to age gracefully for many years to come. If you have the patience, allow this wine to settle and mature for a few years before indulging in its full glory.

The 2019 Dunn Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley has received high praise from the esteemed wine critic, Vinous, who awarded it an impressive score of 93. They describe it as a brooding and potent Cabernet that showcases the true potential of this iconic varietal.

In conclusion, the 2019 Dunn Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley is an exceptional wine that exemplifies the artistry and craftsmanship of its producer. With its powerful structure, complex aromas, and potential for aging, it is a wine that will undoubtedly leave a lasting impression on any wine connoisseur fortunate enough to experience it.
