jebdunnuck.com, February 2022

(98+ points) On another level, the 2019 Ermitage Ex Voto Blanc is more reductive and tight, with a brilliant, concentrated, full-bodied, layered profile on the palate. White currants, quinces, scorched earth, and...

Decanter, October 2020

A dense, aromatically imposing wine despite the fact it's fairly closed at this early stage, giving little away. Very full-bodied indeed, full of fat and power. A powerful Ex-Voto this year that will age well, it has the...

Wine Spectator, March 2024

A complex, densely packed white that opens up to reveal layer after layer of warm apple strudel, honeysuckle, citrus oil, ground ginger and lemon curd flavors, glazed over with warm oak spices and toasted cedar. Round and...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, February 2022

(WA 94-96 points) Mainly from Les Murets, but with a shot of L'Hermite, Guigal's 2019 Ermitage Ex Voto Blanc looks pretty compelling from barrel. While the nose features notes of toasted grain, grilled pear and ripe...

jamessuckling.com, May 2023

Stacks of toast, caramel and candied orange character fill out this mouth-filing and highly-structured white Hermitage. Serious tannins drive the finish which ploughs along like a mighty ocean liner. From two plots...

The Guigal Estate was founded in 1946 by Etienne Guigal in Ampuis, a small ancient village and cradle of the Cote-Rotie appellation. It shelters a unique vineyard where the vines and the wines have been famous for 2,400 years. Arriving in the region in 1924 at the age of 14, Etienne began his career at Vidal-Fleury, participating in its development and working his way up to the position of cellar-master before leaving to establish his own company. He has vinified 67 harvests in Cote-Rotie.

In 1961, although still very young, Marcel Guigal took over management of the establishment from his father who was stricken suddenly with total blindness. In 1973, his wife Bernadette joined him and they worked together to develop the family business. In 1975, their son Philippe was born and is today the estate’s winemaker. With his wife Eve, he represents the third generation to continue the family business, in the service of the great wines of the Rhone Valley.

Their hard work and perseverance enabled them to purchase the Vidal-Fleury Establishment in the mid ‘80s and in 1995, they acquired the famous Chateau d’Ampuis, an ancient fort built in the 12th century, later repurposed into a Renaissance chateau during the 16th century. In a state of neglect and terrible disrepair, Guigal has taken on a colossal renovation, spanning nearly 11 years with over 100 people working on the project.

The Chateau d’Ampuis has become the headquarters of the Guigal Estate while the offices and the cellars remain in the ancient small village of Ampuis. While their vineyards span the length and breadth of what the Rhone Valley offers, the heart of the winery’s production is still Cote-Rotie, whose ultimate expression can be found in Guigal’s most famous releases: La Landonne, La Turque, and La Mouline.

Ladies and gentlemen, allow me to introduce you to the exquisite 2019 Guigal Ermitage Ex Voto Blanc. This captivating white wine hails from the esteemed Rhone region in France, specifically the northern sub-region of Hermitage. Crafted by the renowned producer Guigal, this wine is a true testament to their dedication and expertise.

In the glass, the Guigal Ermitage Ex Voto Blanc enchants the eye with its radiant golden hue, shimmering like liquid sunshine. The aroma that wafts from the glass is nothing short of enchanting. Delicate floral notes dance alongside captivating hints of honeyed apricots, ripe pears, and a touch of exotic spices. With each swirl, the wine reveals more layers, enticing you further into its intoxicating embrace.

On the palate, this Marsanne varietal wine exhibits a remarkable balance between richness and freshness. The velvety texture coats the tongue, delivering an exquisite blend of flavors. Juicy stone fruits, such as peaches and nectarines, mingle with zesty citrus notes, creating a symphony of flavors that is both vibrant and complex. A subtle minerality adds depth and structure, while a hint of toasted almonds lingers on the finish, leaving a lasting impression.

The 2019 Guigal Ermitage Ex Voto Blanc is a wine of exceptional quality and elegance. It showcases the unique terroir of Hermitage, with its rocky soils and cool climate, resulting in a wine that is both powerful and refined. This wine deserves to be savored on its own, allowing its charms to fully unfold, or paired with equally exquisite dishes such as seared scallops or roasted chicken with truffle risotto.

In conclusion, the 2019 Guigal Ermitage Ex Voto Blanc is a masterpiece of winemaking. Its beauty, complexity, and sheer elegance make it a true treasure for wine enthusiasts. Whether you are a seasoned connoisseur or a curious novice, this wine is sure to captivate your senses and leave a lasting impression.
