Tignanello is produced exclusively from the vineyard of the same name, a parcel of some 140 acres (57 hectares) with limestone-rich soils and a southwestern exposure at 1150-1325 feet (350-400 meters) above sea level at the Tignanello estate.

It was the first Sangiovese wine to be aged in small oak barrels, the first modern red wine in the region to use such non-traditional varieties as Cabernet in the blend, and among the first red wines from the Chianti Classico area to be produced without white grapes.

The wine, originally called "Chianti Classico Riserva vigneto Tignanello" (a Chianti Classico Riserva from the Tignanello vineyard), was produced for the first time from a single vineyard parcel in 1970, when the blend contained 20% of Canaiolo and 5% of Trebbiano and Malvasia, both white grapes, and the wine aged in small oak barrels.

In 1971, it became a Tuscan red table wine rather than a Chianti Classico and was called Tignanello. In the 1975 vintage, the percentage of white grapes was definitively eliminated from the blend. Ever since 1982, the blend has been the one currently used. Tignanello is bottled only in favorable vintages, and was not produced in 1972, 1973, 1974, 1976, 1984, 1992, and 2002.

The 2020 Antinori Tignanello IGT is a proprietary blend red wine from Tuscany, Italy. Produced by the renowned Antinori estate, this vintage is composed predominantly of Sangiovese (68-75%), with Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon making up the remaining proportion. The wine is sealed with a traditional cork and has an alcohol content of 14.0%.

This wine has garnered high praise from several esteemed reviewers, reflecting its quality and appeal. Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate awarded it a score of 95, noting its "gorgeous bouquet with an upfront and accessible personality" and highlighting flavors of "dark cherry, dried raspberry, spice, toasted almond, and citrusy blood orange." The review underscores the wine’s sweet and silky tannins, indicating that this vintage is approachable and does not require extended aging.

Vinous gave the 2020 Tignanello an impressive score of 96. Antonio Galloni described it as "so primary, so intensely fruit-driven, that it almost tastes like a barrel sample." He identified a "burst of red Sangiovese fruit" complemented by "hints of blood orange, cinnamon, spice, dried flowers, and mocha." Galloni commended the wine’s sleek and racy character and praised its balance, remarking on the fine tannins underpinning the bright, sculpted fruit. He expressed anticipation for how this wine will evolve with age.

James Suckling rated the wine at 97, emphasizing the sophistication of its nose with "violets and lavender with dark fruit and hints of dark chocolate." He noted the medium-bodied nature of the wine with a fine tannin structure, describing it as having "finesse and beauty" with a very long finish. Suckling recommended enjoying this wine in three to four years.

Wine Spectator gave it a score of 94, describing the wine as "concentrated" with flavors of "black cherry, blackberry, iron, tobacco, and vanilla framed by sweet spices and toast accents." The review acknowledged the mouth-coating tannins but noted that the wine is "pretty well-balanced overall," suggesting it will be best enjoyed between 2026 and 2045.
