The wines of Clos Mogador have become as famous as other mythical wines of the world such as Italy's Sassicaia and Bordeaux's Chateau Margaux. Located in Gratallops in the heart of the Priorat hills, the estate is owned by Rene Barbier, descendent of a renowned family of French winemakers and one of the founders of the Priorat revolution. He was the first of a group of pioneers who made the “New Priorats” and has worked successfully towards recovering the region’s unique terroir.

In 1979, Barbier purchased a small plot of vineyard in the village of Gratallops which he planted with Grenache and Carignan, along with some Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. This was the beginning of his Clos Mogador project. A few years later, he purchased a further 20 hectares in the guise of Manyetes (Vi de Vila de Gratallops) and Nelin (a white wine). Forever obsessed by terroir, Barbier strives to reveal the classic characteristics of this wine region and confesses that he has a weakness for Grenache.

The vineyard site for Clos Mogador is a vast amphitheater of crumbling slate, surrounded by mountains up to 1200 meters high, while the vineyard’s lower extremes are caressed by the Siurana River.

The prestigious Clos Mogador flagship release became Catalonia’s first officially recognized “Vi de Finca” or “estate wine”. Additionally it bears distinction as a D.O.Ca Priorat, which guarantees that all grapes used to make the wine have been sourced exclusively from a single vineyard for at least five years.

A proprietary blend of Grenache, Carignan, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon, it bides its time in carefully selected French oak barrels. Clos Mogador is made with affection and dedication, attentively following the traditional artisan methods of the world’s best ‘Grands Cru’ wines.

The 2020 Clos Mogador is a proprietary blend red wine produced by Clos Mogador in the Priorat region of Spain. This vintage has an alcohol content of 15.0%. This wine comes from a particularly challenging year in Priorat, marked by an unusual amount of rain and fungal issues.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate rated this wine at 97 points, highlighting its impressive balance and power. According to the publication, "The 2020 Clos Mogador comes from a very challenging vintage in Priorat, a year with lots of rain and some fungus problems that are very unusual in the zone, which is usually very healthy." Despite these challenges, Clos Mogador acquired an additional four hectares to maintain production levels, resulting in a total of 26,000 bottles produced.

The 2020 vintage is noted for its tannic structure and slight astringency, a departure from previous years. The wine matured exclusively in 2,000-liter oak foudre, which minimized the wood's impact on the final product. This method marks a shift from traditional barrel aging and contributes to the wine's unique profile. "The wine is more tannic and a little astringent despite not having any time in barrels anymore," noted the reviewer from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate.

While the tannins in the 2020 vintage did not reach the same quality as those from 2019, the decision to harvest earlier was made to preserve the wine's acidity and freshness. The result is a powerful wine that maintains a good balance, albeit with a different tannic quality compared to previous years. This wine's robust character and well-executed balance despite the adverse conditions make it a standout from the 2020 vintage.

For enthusiasts of hearty red wines with complex tannins and balanced profiles, the 2020 Clos Mogador presents a compelling option, especially for those interested in experiencing how vintners can overcome environmental challenges to produce high-quality wines.
