Clos Rougeard’s Saumur-Champigny “Le Bourg” 2020 comes from one of the Loire Valley’s most closely watched Cabernet Franc addresses. The domaine, founded in 1664 in Chacé near Saumur, was shaped in modern times by the Foucault family’s organic, low-intervention approach—“no synthetic chemicals and minimalist winemaking,” as the estate describes it—before its 2017 purchase by the Bouygues family, who have said they will maintain the estate’s identity and practices.

“Le Bourg” is the flagship red from a single, historic parcel in the heart of Chacé. Clos Rougeard notes the site’s shallow clay-loam over chalky tuffeau limestone and its very old vines, factors that typically push this cuvée toward the domaine’s most concentrated and structured expression. The winery also points to gentle, “infusion”-style fermentation with minimal extraction, a technique aimed at preserving perfume and finesse even when the raw material is dense.

Vinous reviewed the 2020 in August 2025 and awarded it an excellent 94 points. Rebecca Gibb MW calls it “a baby,” adding that it is “not due to be released until March 2026,” and that the timeline makes sense because “it is far too young.” Her note captures a wine that already suggests seriousness without overstating its scale: “The 2020 provides the flavor of a big wine, but it’s not a big wine, remaining just short of medium-bodied.”

Aromatically, Gibb highlights a classic, savory register—“smoky bacon and coffee grounds alongside dark fruit with a hint of balsamic”—and she emphasizes the texture, describing “intense concentration and richness” and “an abundance and richness to the tannins that hold and coat the mouth.” She concludes that it is “scented and long but needs time to come around,” positioning Le Bourg 2020 as a cellar-first purchase, built more for evolution than early accessibility.
