Vinous, August 2023

96+ The 2020 Saffredi is compelling. Deep yet quite structured, 2020 is unlike any Saffredi I can recall tasting because of its balance of intense dark fruit and vertical structure. Plum, blackberry, pencil shavings...

Decanter, March 2023

Saffredi was first produced in 1987 and has rightfully forged its place in the pantheon of superTuscans. Elisabetta Geppetti's son, Ettore now oversees the estate's winemaking, and he told me that 2020 was ‘an Atlantic...

The Wine Independent, January 2023

The 2020 Fattoria Le Pupille Saffredi has a much more directly fruity nose than the 2019, with leafy redcurrant and bramble aromas and a bit of spice. It is more fruit-focused and simple at the moment. Likewise on the...

Fattoria Le Pupille, located in the Maremma region of Tuscany, is a leading winery owned by Elisabetta Geppetti, the Ambassador of Maremma and called the Lady of Morellino. As a young student, Elisabetta had foreseen great productive potential in the countryside she loved, and armed with her enthusiasm and love of wine which she inherited from her grandfather, she embarked on a journey to transform her family’s small wine estate into what it is today: 175+ acres of vineyards, more than 500,000 bottles made every year and presence in the markets of four continents.

The core of the property is around the village of Pereta surrounded by 65 acres of vineyard that include 12 acres which give life to the winery’s legendary wine: Saffredi. With the support of Italian wine legend Giacomo Tachis, she replanted Cabernet Sauvignon on a few vines of Sangiovese, which in 1985 started bearing fruit, giving birth to a project that has made the winery the true pioneer of Maremma.

The operating nucleus of the property, from early 2000, is in proximity of Istia d’Ombrone near Grosseto. The winery is an antique farmhouse surrounded by a 30-acre vineyard, including a small patch dedicated to Sangiovese grapes coming from ancient vine rows.

The Le Pupille vineyards are planted to 70% Sangiovese, 10% Malvasia Nera and Alicante, 4% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Merlot, 2% Syrah and 2% Cabernet Franc. There are 23 acres of vineyards for the white grape varieties: Traminer, Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon.

Introducing the exquisite 2020 Fattoria Le Pupille Saffredi IGT, a red wine from the renowned Tuscany region of Italy. Crafted by the esteemed Fattoria Le Pupille winery, this proprietary blend is a true testament to their mastery of winemaking.

As you pour a glass of this captivating wine, you are immediately captivated by its deep, ruby red color, which hints at the richness and complexity that awaits. The nose is a symphony of aromas, showcasing the Tuscan coast's fresh herbs, including sage, mint, rosemary, and thyme. These herbal notes intertwine harmoniously with the fragrant blackcurrants, creating a bouquet that is both invigorating and enticing.

On the palate, the 2020 Fattoria Le Pupille Saffredi IGT reveals its full-bodied nature and impeccable structure. Fine, chewy tannins provide a velvety texture and contribute to the wine's remarkable length and consistency. This is a wine that exudes elegance and refinement, with subtle nuances that evolve with each sip.

Renowned wine critic James Suckling awarded this vintage an impressive score of 98 points, praising its racy and beautiful character. He notes the slightly higher inclusion of cabernet sauvignon, which adds a touch of class to the blend. Suckling suggests allowing the wine to age gracefully in the bottle for three or four years, recommending a tasting after 2027 to fully appreciate its potential.

Additionally, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate awarded the 2020 Saffredi a remarkable score of 95 points. They highlight the wine's exuberant and explosive nature, showcasing a ripe and rich interpretation. The blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot shines through, with flavors of blackberry, perfumed rose, dried apricot, spice, and sweet cinnamon. The minimal oak intervention allows the dark fruit to take center stage, resulting in a wine that delivers a vertical progression of flavors.

Indulge in the 2020 Fattoria Le Pupille Saffredi IGT, a wine that embodies the essence of Tuscany and showcases the mastery of Fattoria Le Pupille. This is a wine that deserves a place in your cellar, where it will continue to evolve and impress for years to come.
