Decanter, November 2022

This magnificent wine has a dark ruby hue, with effusive ripe plummy fruit, a pronounced earthy edge, and notes of liquorice and pepper. The texture is dense and firm, yet there is an elegance that makes the wine feel...

Burghound, January 2023

(92-95 points) Here too the elegant nose is cool, pure and reserved with its pretty and layered array of various red berries, plum, violet and soft earth hints. The delicious middleweight flavors possess outstanding...

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy, September 2025

Magenta in colour. This appears robust more than fine, at first. Solid, workmanlike fruit, the oak makes up part of the structure. Dark raspberry fruit through the middle, and quite persistent. There is a touch of menthol...

View From The Cellar, November 2022

The Clos St. Jacques from Domaine Rousseau is aged in more new oak than the Ruchottes and it shows this new oaky influence in a very attractive manner in 2021. The bouquet delivers a complex and very classy blend of red...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, January 2023

(92-94 points) The 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Saint-Jacques delivers aromas of cassis, sweet berries, spices and soil, framed by a creamy patina of new oak. Medium to full-bodied, supple and concentrated, it's...

The 2021 Domaine Armand Rousseau Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Saint-Jacques is a Pinot Noir from one of the most established addresses in Gevrey-Chambertin. Rousseau’s Clos Saint-Jacques holding is a 2.2-hectare parcel, and Decanter notes it sits “on the edge of the cooling influence of the combe,” a factor the magazine says helps “deliver a silky wine of great finesse and purity.”

Across the major critics, the wine draws consistently strong praise, led by an excellent 97-point review from Decanter, which calls it “magnificent.” That note describes a “dark ruby hue,” with “effusive ripe plummy fruit,” a “pronounced earthy edge,” plus “liquorice and pepper.” Decanter also underlines the wine’s structure and pacing, calling the texture “dense and firm” while still “approachable,” and recommending “ageing for at least five years” due to its “tightly wound complexity.”

Neal Martin at Vinous (94 points) highlights the 2021’s aromatics, calling it “the most fruit-forward bouquet” with “gushing redcurrant, raspberry and wild strawberry,” alongside “lavender and rosemary.” On the palate, he finds it “medium-bodied with svelte tannins and well-judged acidity,” adding that it is “utterly seductive” yet built with “purity and structure” to age.

Burghound (95; 92–95) emphasizes restraint and mineral detail, citing an “elegant…cool, pure and reserved” nose, “outstanding delineation,” and “pungent minerality,” finishing “superbly long if youthfully austere.” Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate (94; 92–94) points to a richer frame—“cassis, sweet berries, spices and soil,” “framed by a creamy patina of new oak”—and calls it “layered and seamless.” John Gilman (95) likewise notes the “new oaky influence…in a very attractive manner,” with a “deep, full-bodied and elegant” profile and a “perfectly balanced finish.” Jasper Morris (95) finds it initially “robust more than fine,” with oak contributing structure, but says it gains interest with air and time, “ready to challenge the early leaders.”
