The 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin from Domaine Armand Rousseau is a village-level Pinot Noir from one of the Côte de Nuits’ benchmark family estates, now led by Eric Rousseau with his daughter Cyrielle. In 2021 the domaine faced severe frost and a sharply reduced crop, yet the wine comes in at a moderate 13% alcohol and reads as a classic Rousseau: restrained, precise, and built more on balance than on sheer power.

This cuvée is not a single-vineyard expression. Decanter reports that the domaine’s “classique” Gevrey is “a true ‘cuvée ronde’” that, in 2021, “incorporates… eight parcels from around the village, including three premier crus.” That blending shows in the wine’s breadth and clarity. Decanter highlights an “initial attack [of] pure, expressive ripe cherry aromas with floral and earthy complexity,” adding that it is “darker and more substantial than the Clos du Château while still showcasing the pleasantly light and fresh character of the vintage.” Decanter’s 93-point review stands out as an excellent endorsement, with a suggested drinking window of 2025–2040.

Jasper Morris (Inside Burgundy) similarly emphasizes finesse over weight, noting “a little more depth of colour… perhaps offering a touch more fruit,” while stressing that “delicacy is at the forefront,” finishing on “a very pretty alpine strawberry finish” (92 points).

John Gilman finds the 2021 “equally refined,” describing aromas of “red and black cherries, grilled meats, raw cocoa, woodsmoke, dark soil tones and a hint of oak,” and praising its “impeccable balance” and “very precise finish” (91 points).

Wine Spectator also rates it an excellent 93, calling it “fluid” and “vibrant,” with “pure flavors of cherry, raspberry, graphite and incense,” and “well-integrated tannins,” concluding it is “approachable now” despite its evident length and structure.
