Castello Romitorio’s 2022 Romitorio Toscana IGT (often seen historically as “RomiTòro” or “Il Toro”) is the estate’s modern red blend, made from Syrah and Petit Verdot and sourced from the Scansano area in coastal Maremma, then vinified at the producer’s Montalcino winery. The estate itself is based in northwest Montalcino, where it was founded in 1984 by artist Sandro Chia, whose bull drawing has long signaled the wine’s bolder, coastal-Tuscan stance.
Critics largely agree that 2022 delivers concentration without losing pace. Jeb Dunnuck gives an excellent 94 points, calling it “a dark, polished Toscana Rosso” with “silky tannins and bright acidity that keeps it moving,” and says it “never” feels heavy, projecting strong drinking from 2026–2036. Wine Spectator is equally enthusiastic at 94 points—another excellent review—highlighting “blackberry, boysenberry, bacon fat and violet,” and praising how it is “beautifully integrated, with polished tannins and lively acidity,” recommending 2026–2038 after tasting it twice “with consistent notes.”
James Suckling (93 points) frames the style as more taut than plush: “Tense and polished,” with ripe cherry and red plum fruit, “dried flowers,” “red licorice,” and “a touch of iodine,” finishing “nicely velvety,” with the flexibility to “drink or hold.”
Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate (92 points) offers the most technical snapshot, describing a “blockbuster 50–50 blend of Syrah and Petit Verdot” and a “creative Bordeaux-meets-Rhône experiment set in Tuscany,” vinified in “stainless steel tanks and concrete.” The note emphasizes “vinous richness,” black fruit and smoke, plus an aromatic edge of “cracked white pepper, garrigue and juniper berry,” and concludes that it “delivers racy freshness alongside lingering tannins.” Wine Advocate also reports first production in 2008 and a 2022 production of 37,000 bottles.
Overall, Romitorio 2022 reads as a polished, dark-fruited Super Tuscan with savory detail and firm structure, backed by multiple low-to-mid 90s endorsements at the top of the category.
