Château de Beaucastel’s Châteauneuf-du-Pape “Hommage à Jacques Perrin” 2022 is the estate’s flagship red, produced only in top years and built around Mourvèdre from old vines. Decanter notes that “around 60% of the blend comes from old-vine Mourvèdre from the Courrieux vineyard.” The Perrin family farms Beaucastel organically (and has long used biodynamic practices), on the appellation’s galets roulés soils over clay, sand, and limestone.

The 2022 vintage at Beaucastel was picked early, with harvest beginning August 19. In the cellar, Decanter reports that the grapes were “destemmed, fermented in tronconic wooden vats using natural yeasts after a brief cold maceration, with regular punching down.” The result, across reviewers, is a wine of scale that’s kept in proportion by freshness and structure.

Several critics delivered excellent, near-unanimous top-tier scores. Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate (Yohan Castaing) calls it “a spectacular and immense wine,” highlighting “increased finesse and precision,” with “structured but velvety tannins” and a “long, mineral, penetrating finish” (98 points; noted as 98+ previously). Decanter (98) emphasizes its authority and longevity: “great palate weight and density,” “searching” tannins, and “a lovely sense of vibrancy and freshness… that will age for a very long time.” James Suckling (98) similarly finds it “focused, dense… and well-structured,” recommending patience, “Best from 2027.”

A Mourvèdre-led profile comes through clearly. Jeb Dunnuck (98) says it “just screams Mourvèdre” with “rare meat” and herbs, while Vinous (Nicolas Greinacher, 97) points to “mind-boggling intensity” and advises waiting “until at least 2032.” Wine Spectator (97) underscores both power and control—“massive… both finessed and impressively muscular”—and reports production at “800 cases made, 50 cases imported.” Blend details vary slightly by source, but all agree Mourvèdre dominates, supported by Grenache and Syrah, with some citing Counoise.
