The Fattoria le Pupille 2022 Morellino di Scansano Riserva is primarily Sangiovese with a small addition of Cabernet Sauvignon that adds concentration and draws the wine toward a black-fruit spectrum while reflecting the...

Wine Enthusiast, April 2025

I have high hopes that Morellino will return to center stage performing as the lean, agile, crowd-pleasing version of Sangiovese that it is. If the comeback is successful, it will be in large part thanks to Le Pupille's...

The Riserva represents the roots of Fattoria Le Pupille, being the first wine made by the young winery—even before the creation of the DOC Morellino in 1978. The Riserva is the full expression of Sangiovese and the wild strength of Maremma.

Fattoria Le Pupille’s Morellino di Scansano Riserva 2022 is a DOCG red from Maremma, southern Tuscany, built around Sangiovese—locally called Morellino—blended with a small portion of Cabernet Sauvignon (90%/10%). The estate, led by Elisabetta Geppetti, has long been associated with raising the profile of Morellino di Scansano; the winery’s first commercial release dates back to 1978. For this Riserva, fruit comes from estate vineyards around Scansano in the coastal hills (about 50–250 meters). Fermentation is in stainless steel, followed by roughly 15 months in large Slavonian oak casks (20–40 hL). Production is reported at about 40,000 bottles, with alcohol typically listed around 14%.

Across critical reviews, the theme is a ripe but controlled expression of warm-climate Sangiovese, with freshness kept firmly in view. Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate gives an excellent **93-point** score, with Monica Larner noting it is “primarily Sangiovese with a small addition of Cabernet Sauvignon that adds concentration and draws the wine toward a black-fruit spectrum while reflecting the warmth of a hot vintage.” She adds that the élevage in large cask “reveal[s] well-managed structure and tannins,” and highlights “careful attention to preserving acidity” alongside “crunchy fruit lifted by notes of rose and violet.”

James Suckling is even more bullish, awarding an excellent **94 points** and emphasizing shape and drive: “energy and verticality,” plus scents of “dried cherries, strawberries, wild sage and rosemary.” He calls it “Very Tuscan, with clarity and brightness,” and suggests immediate enjoyment.

Wine Enthusiast, also with an excellent **93 points**, positions the wine in a broader regional context. Danielle Callegari argues that if Morellino returns “to center stage” as a “lean, agile, crowd-pleasing version of Sangiovese,” it will be “in large part thanks to Le Pupille’s work polishing this grape’s natural talents.”
