Fattoria Le Pupille’s Morellino di Scansano DOCG “Poggio Valente” 2023 is the estate’s flagship single-vineyard Sangiovese from Maremma, in southern Tuscany. The wine comes from the 10-hectare Poggio Valente site in Pereta (Magliano), around 350 meters above sea level, a hillside location that the estate replanted in the late 1990s and early 2000s to focus on a more precise expression of Sangiovese. In the cellar, the wine is fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel with extended skin contact (about 30–35 days), then aged roughly 15 months in a mix of large French oak casks and 500–600 liter tonneaux.

The strongest critical assessments are emphatic. James Suckling awards an excellent 95 points, calling it “a solid and beautiful red” with “bright acidity and firm tannins,” and emphasizing that it is “pure sangiovese.” He notes immediate appeal but recommends patience: “You can drink it now, but it will be better in three or four years.”

Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate also gives an excellent 95 points, with Monica Larner reporting it was “bottled in June 2025” and “scheduled for release soon.” She contextualizes a difficult Tuscan season—“persistent spring rain and widespread mildew pressure”—and credits southern Maremma’s “naturally ventilated setting” for more balanced conditions. Larner highlights the vineyard’s airflow and “luminous quality,” plus “heavier soils rich in clay and limestone” that “lend structure and depth.” She also notes an élevage shift “away from smaller oak toward larger vessels,” concluding: “The plan for this wine is working out beautifully.”

Other reviews reinforce its youthful structure. Decanter (92) finds it “youthful, tightly wound and chewy,” with “pretty cherry and strawberry,” advising time as “the wood imprint is still dominant.” Vinous (91) describes sweet red cherry, mint, pipe tobacco, licorice and “a kiss of French oak,” suggesting “a year or two in bottle to soften.”
