Tenuta degli Dei’s 2022 Cavalli is a Toscana IGT red from Panzano in Chianti made in a Bordeaux-leaning style, and it has drawn standout reviews from three major critics. The blend is led by Cabernet Sauvignon with substantial Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc; Vinous cites 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Petit Verdot and 15% Cabernet Franc, while Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate reports 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Petit Verdot and 15% Cabernet Franc. Whatever the exact split, the wine’s identity is clear: structured, dark-fruited Tuscany with an uncommon Chianti Classico-area varietal mix.
The strongest review comes from Antonio Galloni, who gives it 95 points and calls it “superb,” praising a “dark, ample and layered” profile with “sumptuous black cherry, plum, leather, menthol, sage and mocha.” Galloni also notes that the approach “works so well here,” highlighting the “strong presence of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc,” and reports élevage of “18 months in French oak, 50% new,” with some use of slightly larger barrels for Petit Verdot and Franc. He goes further, writing that Tenuta degli Dei “remains one of the most original and distinctive wines in Chianti Classico.”
James Suckling’s 93-point note is consistent in tone and flavor, describing a “deep and intense” nose of “cherry liqueur, plums, black olives and dark spices,” and a “rich, polished and juicy” palate with “very fine tannins” and a “lingering finish.” He concludes: “Drink or hold.”
Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate awards 94 points and frames the 2022 as “a rich and pleasurable expression with velvety intensity and plenty of black fruit,” citing “plum, blackberry and dark cherry… next to delicate floral notes.” The Wine Advocate adds useful context: this was a release of “18,900 bottles (plus larger formats),” made with “a lighter winemaking approach,” from vineyards at “400 meters in elevation on galestro shale soils,” owned by Tommaso Cavalli.
Taken together, the 2022 Cavalli reads as a polished, layered Tuscan red with clear dark-fruit focus, fine tannins, and enough aromatic detail to justify its excellent top-tier scores.
