Suave and concentrated, this impressive Gevrey-Chambertin has elegant tannins, subtle spiciness and good minerality. Excellent red fruit unfurls as it aerates in the glass. Long, velvety finish. From a vineyard below...

Domaine Marc Roy’s Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Prieur 2023 is a 100% Pinot Noir from a villages-level lieu-dit in the Côte de Nuits, situated just below the Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru. The estate is run by Alexandrine Roy, and this cuvée is drawn from old vines—reported at around 70 years of age. In the cellar, the 2023 is described as being hand-harvested, fully destemmed, fermented with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel (with a pre-fermentation maceration), then aged about 11 months in barrel with roughly 50% new oak.

Critical reception is led by an excellent review from James Suckling, who scores it 94 points and calls it “suave and concentrated,” highlighting “elegant tannins, subtle spiciness and good minerality.” Suckling also notes that “excellent red fruit unfurls as it aerates in the glass,” and emphasizes its “long, velvety finish,” concluding, “Drink or hold.” His note underscores a style that aims for both generosity and polish, with fruit depth supported by structure rather than overt sweetness.

Vinous is a touch more reserved but still positive, with Neal Martin rating it in the 90–92 range. He finds “attractive brambly red fruit mixed with forest floor and spice box scents,” and describes a “medium-bodied” palate with “grainy tannins on the entry.” Martin points to a darker register than some siblings—“more black fruit than the La Justice”—and flags a seasoning of “black pepper on the finish.” While he suggests the wine is “missing the delineation” he saw in the 2022 and that “the aromatics just need to pull their socks up,” he still concludes, “This is promising.”

Taken together, Clos Prieur 2023 reads as a serious Gevrey: old-vine concentration, savory complexity, and a mineral-and-spice profile, with enough stuffing to reward short-term cellaring while remaining approachable with air.
