Arnot-Roberts’ 2024 Sauvignon Blanc from Ascona Vineyard is a focused, site-driven Santa Cruz Mountains white built around tension, savory detail, and length. The fruit comes from a small, high-elevation ridgetop vineyard—about 4.5 acres at roughly 2,500 feet—planted in 2000 to Sauvignon Blanc Clone 1 and farmed organically. Ascona sits about 15 miles from the Pacific Ocean, where warm daytime sunshine is tempered by regular overnight fog and cool ocean breezes. The soils are marine in origin, including weathered sandstone, shale, and siltstone, a setup that often translates into brisk structure and mineral inflection in the glass.

Winemaking here is intentionally restrained. According to Vinous, the 2024 was “fermented in stainless steel and aged in neutral wood,” choices that typically preserve varietal clarity while keeping oak influence out of the way.

The professional verdict so far is strong. Vinous’ Antonio Galloni awarded the wine 92 points—an excellent review for a Sauvignon Blanc in this leaner, more mineral-leaning California style—and described it as “a potent, tightly wound wine.” Galloni’s note emphasizes precision over overt fruitiness, with “lemon peel, chalk, mint, slate, dried herbs and sage” presented as “finely cut” flavors in what he calls a “chiseled, nervy Sauvignon Blanc.” He also highlights the coastal imprint in the finish: “Brisk saline top notes frame the persistent, salivating finish.”

Taken together, the 2024 Ascona Vineyard reads as Sauvignon Blanc for drinkers who value texture, minerality, and savory lift as much as primary fruit. It’s not positioned as a lush, tropical expression; instead, it leans into citrus peel, herbal tones, and stony edges, with enough concentration to stay “persistent” without losing its line. Galloni sums it up plainly: “It is very nicely done.”
