A bright and lively Champagne, with citrusy acidity enlivening rich hints of crème de cassis, toasted almond and crystallized honey. Accents of minerally smoke and saline linger on the creamy finish. Drink now. – AN

It's beautifully textured and has a solid mid-palate, good density, and a clean, crisp finish, all making for a high-quality Champagne to enjoy over the coming 5-7 years.

The blend this year is comprised of sixty percent pinot noir, twenty-five percent pinot meunier and fifteen percent chardonnay and the wine spent twenty-four months aging sur latte prior to disgorgement. The bouquet wafts from the glass in a complex blend of apple, quince, a bit of toastiness, lovely soil tones, dried flowers and a gently smoky topnote. On the palate the wine is crisp, full-bodied, focused and solid at the core, with frothy mousse, bright acids and very good length and grip on the light on its feet finish. I am guessing that this is primarily base year 2011 (despite no date of disgorgement on my tech sheets), as it seems just a bit more high-toned than last year’s version. This is really a lovely wine.

On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, generous but nicely focused, with an enveloping core of fruit, ripe but racy acids and a nicely balanced finish. This is a very solid non-vintage cuvée that should evolve gracefully for the coming decade. - William Kelley

Piper's nonvintage Champagne is balanced, fruity, fresh and elegant. It is both ripe and crisp with apple fruits, a mineral edge and final fruitiness. Drink now. - ROGER VOSS

Piper Heidsieck

Piper-Heidsieck started out as a cloth and wine trading company Heidsieck & Co which was founded by Florens-Louis Heidsieck in 1785. His distinctive champagne’s reputation quickly spread and won favor at court.

The Piper-Heidsieck Maison owns precious wine-growing land from the Montagne de Reims to the Cote des Bar. The blend of its signature cuvee is 55 to 60% Pinot Noir for structure, 10 to 15% Chardonnay grapes which add elegant nuances, 15 to 20% Pinot Meunier which enhances fruitiness, and 10 to 15% reserve wines which provide consistency from year to year.

Vinification is done separately by variety and by vineyard in order to preserve their unique characters and offer maximum blending flexibility.
