Vega Sicilia’s 2016 Único is a flagship Ribera del Duero red released only after long maturation, and it arrives with some of the strongest critical notices in recent memory. The blend is 96% Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) and 4% Cabernet Sauvignon, bottled at 14.5% alcohol. Production was substantial for an icon wine but still limited in absolute terms: 92,292 bottles plus 3,695 magnums, with the wine bottled in May 2022, according to Luis Gutiérrez of *Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate*.
The 2016 growing season is central to how reviewers frame the wine. Gutiérrez calls it “a very balanced year, with higher yields and finer-boned wines,” shaped by “a cooler than average spring and a warm summer” and a dry September that delivered “healthy grapes and balanced ripening.” He also notes the harvest ran from September 22 to October 11. The finished wine’s reported analytical details include pH 3.82 and 4.8 grams of acidity (as cited by *Wine Advocate*).
In the glass, the reviews converge on perfume, freshness, and restraint without sacrificing depth. Gutiérrez writes that the 2016 Único is “perfumed and elegant,” with “the old Vega perfume, intoxicating, complex and nuanced,” and a palate that is “very energetic… vibrant and fresh, not lacking power but with lots of elegance.” He labels it “a monumental vintage of Único,” awarding an excellent 99 points.
James Suckling, who scored it an excellent 98, emphasizes poise and early harmony: “already approachable… Everything is in harmony,” with “an almost ethereal quality” compared with the denser 2015. He highlights “a hint of minerality” alongside “blackberries and dark cherries,” and notes that the tannins are “firm yet softened,” finishing with persistence that “lingers for a minute.”
As a complete package, the 2016 Único reads as a classic long-aged Vega Sicilia release that prioritizes perfume, balance, and length, with the structure to reward cellaring while showing composure even now.
