Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, December 2020

I also tasted the 2017 Clos Mogador next to the 2018 vintage. The varietal mix has been slowly changing, with less Cabernet and Syrah and more and more Cariñena. In 2006, they started fermenting with indigenous yeasts...

The wines of Clos Mogador have become as famous as other mythical wines of the world such as Italy's Sassicaia and Bordeaux's Chateau Margaux. Located in Gratallops in the heart of the Priorat hills, the estate is owned by Rene Barbier, descendent of a renowned family of French winemakers and one of the founders of the Priorat revolution. He was the first of a group of pioneers who made the “New Priorats” and has worked successfully towards recovering the region’s unique terroir.

In 1979, Barbier purchased a small plot of vineyard in the village of Gratallops which he planted with Grenache and Carignan, along with some Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. This was the beginning of his Clos Mogador project. A few years later, he purchased a further 20 hectares in the guise of Manyetes (Vi de Vila de Gratallops) and Nelin (a white wine). Forever obsessed by terroir, Barbier strives to reveal the classic characteristics of this wine region and confesses that he has a weakness for Grenache.

The vineyard site for Clos Mogador is a vast amphitheater of crumbling slate, surrounded by mountains up to 1200 meters high, while the vineyard’s lower extremes are caressed by the Siurana River.

The prestigious Clos Mogador flagship release became Catalonia’s first officially recognized “Vi de Finca” or “estate wine”. Additionally it bears distinction as a D.O.Ca Priorat, which guarantees that all grapes used to make the wine have been sourced exclusively from a single vineyard for at least five years.

A proprietary blend of Grenache, Carignan, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon, it bides its time in carefully selected French oak barrels. Clos Mogador is made with affection and dedication, attentively following the traditional artisan methods of the world’s best ‘Grands Cru’ wines.

Introducing the exquisite 2017 Clos Mogador, a red wine hailing from the prestigious Priorat region in Spain. This enchanting wine showcases the artistry of the renowned producer, Clos Mogador, and presents a captivating blend of varietals that have been meticulously selected to create a truly exceptional drinking experience.

Captivating in appearance, the 2017 Clos Mogador boasts a deep, garnet-red color that is reminiscent of a rich tapestry. With a graceful swirl in the glass, the wine releases enticing aromas that waft delicately towards the nose. The bouquet is a harmonious blend of ripe fruits, spices, and earthy undertones, creating a symphony of scents that invite exploration.

On the palate, this red gem reveals its true splendor. The varietal mix of the 2017 vintage has undergone a subtle evolution, with a decrease in Cabernet and Syrah and an increase in the noble Cariñena grape. This shift results in a wine that is distinctive and unique, showcasing the rich terroir of the Priorat region.

The 2017 vintage experienced a challenging year, with exceptionally warm and dry conditions. However, the winemaking team at Clos Mogador rose to the occasion, crafting a wine that defies expectations. The slow fermentation process, utilizing larger volumes, allowed for the preservation of freshness and the development of complex flavors.

With a slightly higher alcohol content than its 2018 counterpart, the 2017 Clos Mogador maintains impeccable balance due to its vibrant acidity. The wine caresses the palate with velvety tannins and an opulent texture that lingers long after each sip. The flavors are ripe and indulgent, evoking images of the sun-soaked Mediterranean landscape that nurtured these exceptional grapes.

The 2017 Clos Mogador is a true testament to the mastery of winemaking, a wine that pays homage to the traditions of the Priorat region while pushing boundaries and embracing innovation. With its remarkable complexity and impeccable structure, this red masterpiece is destined to age gracefully, rewarding those patient enough to savor its evolving nuances.

Indulge in the allure of the 2017 Clos Mogador and experience the sheer splendor of this Spanish masterpiece. This is a wine that captures the essence of the Priorat region, a wine that embodies passion, dedication, and the timeless beauty of the vine.
