Every bit as good as the Grands Crus wines he bottles under his domaine and négociant labels, Jean-Marie Fourrier's Clos St-Jacques has a classic combination of density, plushness and poise, with spicy, sappy black cherry and bramble fruit, scented 20% new wood and a fine, detailed, refreshing finish. The class of the terroir shines through here.

Medium deep crimson purple. A very floral bouquet, on first impression perhaps this Clos St-Jacques could use more precision. Sensual and succulent, dark raspberry and blackberry, the suggestion of stems (were some added back in?) add a little structure which is probably necessary as the tannins and acidity are not otherwise pronounced. Still a wine which will give great pleasure. Now I can find the precision at the back, allied to the charm. Drink from 2028.

(94+ points) Perfumed and sumptuous, Fourrier's 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Saint-Jacques has turned out very well, wafting from the glass with aromas of plums and raspberries, complemented by notions of violets, peonies and blood orange. Medium to full-bodied, deep and multidimensional, it's suave and seamless, with succulent acids, velvety tannins and a rose-inflected finish.- William Kelley

The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru exhibits more whole bunch character than the other four "CSJs". Brambly red fruit, brown spices and a touch of wet limestone. This is unquestionably the most transparent of the five. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red berry fruit, slightly coarser tannins but so much energy and tension.
