Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, November 2020

The Fattoria le Pupille 2018 Saffredi borrows quite a bit from all of the grapes that make up the blend (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot). These balanced results open to a round bouquet of dark fruit, black...

Fattoria Le Pupille, located in the Maremma region of Tuscany, is a leading winery owned by Elisabetta Geppetti, the Ambassador of Maremma and called the Lady of Morellino. As a young student, Elisabetta had foreseen great productive potential in the countryside she loved, and armed with her enthusiasm and love of wine which she inherited from her grandfather, she embarked on a journey to transform her family’s small wine estate into what it is today: 175+ acres of vineyards, more than 500,000 bottles made every year and presence in the markets of four continents.

The core of the property is around the village of Pereta surrounded by 65 acres of vineyard that include 12 acres which give life to the winery’s legendary wine: Saffredi. With the support of Italian wine legend Giacomo Tachis, she replanted Cabernet Sauvignon on a few vines of Sangiovese, which in 1985 started bearing fruit, giving birth to a project that has made the winery the true pioneer of Maremma.

The operating nucleus of the property, from early 2000, is in proximity of Istia d’Ombrone near Grosseto. The winery is an antique farmhouse surrounded by a 30-acre vineyard, including a small patch dedicated to Sangiovese grapes coming from ancient vine rows.

The Le Pupille vineyards are planted to 70% Sangiovese, 10% Malvasia Nera and Alicante, 4% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Merlot, 2% Syrah and 2% Cabernet Franc. There are 23 acres of vineyards for the white grape varieties: Traminer, Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon.

The 2018 Fattoria Le Pupille Saffredi IGT is a remarkable red wine from the prestigious region of Tuscany, Italy. With a deep red color that exudes richness, complexity, and elegance, this wine is a true representation of the artistry and craftsmanship of Fattoria Le Pupille.

Crafted from a proprietary blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot, the 2018 Saffredi showcases the best characteristics of each grape variety. This harmonious blend creates a wine that is both powerful and balanced, with a bouquet that opens up to reveal notes of dark fruit, black cherry, and plum. As the wine breathes, additional layers of spice, cured tobacco, and campfire embers emerge, adding depth and complexity to the sensory experience.

On the palate, the 2018 Saffredi displays immediate elegance. The carefully measured tannins provide structure and texture, while the fresh acidity adds vibrancy and lift. This full-bodied expression is not excessively heavy, maintaining a sense of finesse and precision throughout.

Renowned wine critic Robert Parker's Wine Advocate awarded the 2018 Saffredi an impressive score of 96 points, highlighting its balanced nature and immediate elegance. James Suckling also praised this wine, awarding it a score of 97 points and describing its complex nose of currant, sage, rosemary, and rose-petal. The palate was noted for its depth of fruit, fine tannins, and direct focus. Wine Spectator, with a score of 93 points, acknowledged the wine's open-knit structure, flavors of black cherry and plum, and fine harmony.

To fully appreciate the potential of the 2018 Fattoria Le Pupille Saffredi IGT, it is recommended to cellar it for a few more years. However, for those who cannot resist temptation, decanting the wine before serving will allow it to fully express its flavors and aromas. This exceptional wine is a testament to Fattoria Le Pupille's commitment to producing wines of the highest quality, and it promises to be a memorable addition to any wine enthusiast's collection.
