Vega Sicilia, one of Spain’s most famous and legendary wine estates, is located in Ribera del Duero, in the Valbuena de Duero in the province of Valladolid, Castilla y Leon. Founded in 1864 by Don Eloy Lacanda y Chaves, who brought cuttings of Bordelaise varietals such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Merlot, and Pinot Noir from Bordeaux, the estate changed hands several times before it was purchased in 1982 by the Alvarez family. This marked the beginning of one of the most prosperous periods in the history of the company.

A large estate of nearly 1,000 hectares, just 210 hectares are planted to vines which have been grown on the Vega Sicilia estate for over a hundred years. The vines, with an average age of 35 years, are planted to three varieties: Tempranillo (80%), Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and are used to produce Vega Sicilia Unico and Valbuena, as well as wine for their sister property, Bodegas Alion.

Founded on an unwavering commitment to quality and the pursuit of excellence, Vega Sicilia’s guiding principle is that “the best wine is still to be made”.

The 2018 Vega Sicilia Valbuena 5 Year Old Tinto is a remarkable red wine hailing from the renowned Ribera Del Duero region in Castilla y Leon, Spain. This proprietary blend showcases the mastery of the esteemed producer, Vega Sicilia, and is a true testament to their commitment to excellence.

In the glass, this wine exhibits a deep and captivating red color that hints at its complexity. The nose is immediately enticed by the fresh aromas of black and blue fruit, which are complemented by an alluring floral and peppery note. As the wine opens up, delicate hints of cedar, sweet spice, and vanilla emerge, adding further layers to its aromatic profile.

On the palate, the Valbuena 5 Year Old Tinto is a revelation. It showcases a remarkable balance between dusty, powdery tannins and juicy fruit, creating a velvety and textured mouthfeel that is immensely satisfying. The mealy tannins interweave seamlessly with the fruit, enhancing the wine's overall structure and complexity.

Renowned wine critic James Suckling awarded this wine an impressive score of 96 points, noting its deep and complex nature. He describes it as a Valbuena 5 that can be appreciated earlier, making it a versatile choice for both immediate enjoyment and cellaring potential.

Another influential voice in the wine world, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, also bestowed a score of 96 points upon this vintage. The review highlights the cooler vintage, the careful selection of the grapes, and the extended oak aging, which contribute to the wine's rich and mellow mouthfeel. This vintage is said to showcase a spiciness reminiscent of Vega Sicilia's iconic Único, while still retaining its unique character.

Wine Spectator also recognizes the harmonious nature of this wine, awarding it an impressive score of 94 points. The review underscores the flavors of black plum reduction and wild strawberry fruit, along with intriguing notes of Earl Grey tea, cedar, cocoa powder, and earth. The wine is described as well-structured yet supple, with a generous profile that glides across the palate, leaving a finish adorned with fine-grained tannins and fragrant spices.

Overall, the 2018 Vega Sicilia Valbuena 5 Year Old Tinto is a wine of exceptional quality and finesse. It represents the epitome of Spanish winemaking and is a testament to the rich terroir of Ribera Del Duero. Whether enjoyed now or cellared for further development, this wine is sure to leave a lasting impression on any wine enthusiast.
