Orma 2019 is the flagship red from Podere Orma, the Bolgheri estate established in 2004 by the Moretti Cuseri family. The vineyards sit in a high-profile stretch of the Tuscan coast “between Ornellaia and Sassicaia,” as Decanter notes, and the wine is built in a modern Bolgheri, Bordeaux-blend idiom. The blend is consistent across reviewers: 50% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Cabernet Franc. Decanter adds that the fruit comes from “20-year-old vines,” while Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate (Monica Larner) specifies vineyard soils “rich in pebbles and clay with a little sand at 60 meters above sea level.”
Critical reception is notably strong, with several excellent reviews. James Suckling awards 97 points, calling it “tight and powerful… full-bodied and focused with intense structure,” and goes as far as saying, “Perhaps the best Orma ever,” recommending patience: “Try after 2025.” Wine Advocate also rates it highly at 95 points, describing “a soothing display of ripe fruit with blackberry, candied cherry, spice, white pepper and even a speck of red chili flake,” along with “a pop of sour cherry” on a “round and soft” palate.
Decanter’s 94-point review emphasizes aromatic lift and balance, citing “perfumed red and black fruits alongside spicy eucalyptus,” plus tannins that “coat the mouth with dense blackcurrant flavours,” concluding there is “power and freshness” and “definitely an elegance.” Jane Anson (93 points) similarly highlights “fragrance and spice,” “well drawn” tannins, and “eucalyptus edging,” adding that it shows “substance and depth” and should “age for a good decade or so.”
Across the board, the recurring message is structure now and reward later. Multiple critics describe the wine as tight in its youth; Decanter suggests it is “somewhat closed,” while Anson advises decanting “for a few hours” if opening early.
