A juicy and salty red with plums and cedar with light sawdust and hints of dried meat. Medium to full body. Savory. Nice tension at the end. Some chocolate powder. Drink now or hold.

Castello di Bossi’s 2020 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione comes from the southern reaches of the denomination, in Castelnuovo Berardenga, and it aims for a more structured expression of Sangiovese without losing the variety’s lift. It is made from “100% organic Sangiovese,” according to Monica Larner of *Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate*, sourced from estate vineyards around the historic Castello di Bossi property. Larner also points to what distinguishes the site: “a mix of clay and tufo rock.”

Several critics rate it at the top end of the Chianti Classico spectrum for the vintage, with excellent 94-point reviews from both *Wine Advocate* and James Suckling. Larner calls the wine “silky and fine,” noting that despite “power and concentration,” it “actually feels elegantly subtle on the palate.” She describes “lots of cherry and dark plum,” with “integrated tannins [that] add firmness,” and says that “aging in large oak casks is in line with local tradition.”

Antonio Galloni (*Vinous*) gives it 92 points and emphasizes the balance of the warm district with freshness, calling the wine “gorgeous” and “floral, lifted and quite expressive.” He writes that it “marries the richness of this southern district with lovely aromatic presence and a good bit of brightness,” adding that it is “a complete, deeply satisfying wine to drink now and over the next decade or so.” Galloni reports that the 2020 “spent 24 months in 40–50HL casks.”

James Suckling’s 94-point note highlights a more savory register: “a juicy and salty red with plums and cedar,” plus “hints of dried meat,” “nice tension at the end,” and “some chocolate powder.”

*Wine Spectator* (93 points) focuses on structure and aging potential, citing “purity” along with “lively acidity and raspy tannins that grip the finish,” and recommends it “from 2026 through 2039.”
