Tenuta Sette Ponti’s Oreno 2020 is the estate’s flagship “Super Tuscan” Bordeaux blend, bottled as Toscana IGT. It’s built on Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot—specified by James Suckling as “50% merlot, 40% cabernet sauvignon and 10% petit verdot”—and comes in at a substantial 15% ABV. The importer notes organic farming across the estate and élevage of 18 months in French Allier barriques, followed by bottle aging. Wine Spectator reports production at “5,500 cases made, 1,500 cases imported.”
Critics largely agree on a concentrated, modern red that balances richness with structure. The strongest review comes from James Suckling, who awards an excellent 97 points and highlights a “layered, velvety texture,” with “blackberry and black-olive character” plus “iodine and graphite,” finishing “full-bodied and rich with lots of fruit and chewy tannins,” and concluding it “needs two or three years to soften.” That recommendation aligns with Oreno’s evident depth and tannin profile in 2020.
Wine Spectator’s excellent 95-point note calls it “lush, yet dense and lively,” with “black cherry, blackberry and black currant fruit, shaded by mineral, cedar and spice,” and says it “firms up by the finish…with fine length,” recommending a drinking window of “2024 through 2038.”
Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate (94 points) describes a warm-year expression that is “very rich and fleshed out” and “definitely softer compared to the 2019,” emphasizing “savory fruit and velvety concentration with blackberry preserves and baked cherry,” and suggests it can be enjoyed “in the near- or medium-term.”
Among additional perspectives, Decanter (93) finds “weight and power straight away,” praising “the salty, smoked stone taste at the end.” Jane Anson (93) notes “bright fruits,” “liquorice, tapenade and fennel,” plus “a touch of heat on the finish”—a reminder that ripeness and alcohol are part of the wine’s profile.
