Gaja’s Pieve Santa Restituta Brunello di Montalcino 2021 is the estate’s “gold label” Brunello, a 100% Sangiovese from the Torrenieri area in northern Montalcino. The Gaja family acquired the property in 2005, and this bottling blends fruit associated with the Rennina and Sugarille holdings while also incorporating two newer plots, Bolsignano and Villa a Tolli. According to Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, those additions “bring acidity freshness and mineral tension.” The wine is reported at 14.5% alcohol and is aged 24 months in barrique followed by 6 months in cement, with an estimated production of about 90,000 bottles.

Critical reception is strong across the board, with several excellent reviews. James Suckling awards 96 points, calling it “a restrained wine” with “velvety tannins that are powerful yet ripe,” plus “slightly lifted acidity and a long, chewy finish,” advising that while it’s “drinkable now,” it’s “best from 2027.” Wine Spectator (95 points) emphasizes the wine’s darker register, describing it as “dark and saturated with blackberry, black cherry and black currant,” framed by “iron, wild herbs and Mediterranean scrub,” and “focused by vibrant acidity” with “refined tannins.”

Jeb Dunnuck also rates it 95 points and highlights finesse over sheer weight: “pure and detailed on the nose,” with “a silky texture, fine tannins,” and a finish that “floats with fabulous length,” projecting a long drinking window (2026–2041). Vinous (94 points) leans into aromatic lift, citing “heavenly perfumes” of florals and spice, “cool-toned acidity,” and a finish of “saturating tension” with “graphite mineral tones.”

Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate (93 points) finds a more traditionally structured profile—“medium- to full-bodied” with “dried fruit, cassis, tarry smoke and savory leather”—noting it is “lean on the mid-palate yet long and polished,” with “tight-edged tannins” that point to added benefit from bottle age. Overall, this is a balanced, cellar-worthy 2021 Brunello that pairs polish with structure and clear vintage energy.
