Decanter, January 2026

From some of the estate's highest vineyards in the Conca d'Oro, with a high proportion of pietraforte soils, this 2022 shows plenty of dark, succulent berries alongside spice and herbs. It's very youthful at this stage...

Flaccianello della Pieve is 100% Sangiovese from a selection of the best vineyards in the Colli Toscania Centrale IGT region. At the modern, gravity-fed winery, the juice ferments in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks with indigenous yeasts for at least 3 weeks. The wine ages in Troncais and Allier (French) oak barrels for 24 months.

The 2022 Fontodi Flaccianello della Pieve is a Sangiovese wine from Tuscany, Italy. This vintage has garnered high praise from several notable wine critics. James Suckling awarded it an impressive 97 points, highlighting its "huge complexity" and rich fruit profile, with aromas of plums, black cherries, fresh violets, and licorice. Suckling notes that the wine is full-bodied and possesses a well-tamed structure, advising that it will be best enjoyed from 2027.

Wine Spectator also gave the wine a high score of 96 points, describing it as "silky smooth" with flavors of cherry, blackberry, black currant, and toasty oak. The wine is said to pick up earth and mineral elements, leading to a long and expansive aftertaste. Wine Spectator suggests that the wine will reach its peak from 2027 through 2045.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate echoes the sentiment with another 96-point review, calling it a "beautiful, quite bold and thickly extracted" wine. The 2022 vintage is noted for its high alcohol content of 15% and robust character. The wine is made from organically grown grapes, representing the best estate fruit from various elevations and soil types. Production for this vintage is limited to 60,000 bottles, which is down by 40% due to hail damage in one of the core vineyards.

Antonio Galloni from Vinous provides a slightly more reserved assessment with a 94+ score, noting that the wine is "rather quiet" in this vintage. Despite the challenges, Galloni highlights the wine's dark Sangiovese fruit, spice, and leather notes, and suggests it may improve with time in the bottle.

Overall, the 2022 Fontodi Flaccianello della Pieve is a well-regarded Sangiovese with notable complexity and aging potential, albeit with a limited production due to adverse weather conditions.
