About the Burgundy wine region
The name Burgundy (Bourgogne in French) comes from the Burundians, an ancient Germanic people originating in Bornholm who settled in the area during the early Middle Ages.
Burgundy’s best red and white wines set the gold standard for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. At the top of their game, Burgundy wines are acknowledged as some of the most aromatically complex, seductive and silky on the globe. This thanks in part to their indescribable melding of fruits, flowers, minerals, and earth, as well as their facility in projecting an authoritative flavor sans excess weight.
Unfortunately, for many, the best Burgundies are only produced in limited numbers. Burgundy wines can spell trouble for the non-connoisseur—there are still many examples of less than stellar, overpriced bottles for sale. This fact is due to the nature of the region’s vineyard ownership. An individual, small premier cru vineyard may be subdivided amongst a dozen or more owners. These owners may produce everything from plonk to exceptional wines—all at the same price—depending on the skills of the producer.
The Côte d'Or, or "golden slope," is the in heart of Burgundy and is home to the region’s most famous, and pricey, wines. This 30-mile-long ribbon of vineyards is where all the Grand Cru vineyards (except for Chablis Grand Cru) are found. The Côte d'Or lies just south of Dijon extending to Chagny. The greater Burgundy region also envelopes Chablis to the northern extreme, while the Côte Chalonnaise and Maconnais regions are located to the south of the Côte d'Or. Beaujolais, at the extreme southern end of the Burgundy region, almost touches the outreaches of Lyon.
Lush in texture and balanced on the soft side, this red displays black cherry, blackberry, violet and earth flavors. Terrific harmony and a long, complex finish of fruit and mineral. Will be approachable in the short...
Well-defined aromas and flavors of strawberry, cherry, rose and stone are the hallmarks of this expressive red. It firms up nicely, yet remains poised and sophisticated, with fruit, tobacco and iron accents lingering on...
A tight Beaune with ripe strawberries, light earth with some walnuts and vanilla pod. It’s full-bodied with round, chewy tannins and a flavorful finish. Drink after 2023.
(91-93 points) The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Village comes from four hectares of old vines worked by Arnaud Mortet himself. It has a crisp, focused bouquet, quite mineral-driven, with so much freshness. The very well-defined...
A top note of menthol is present on the markedly ripe if more reserved aromas of plum liqueur, cassis and pretty floral scents. There is dramatic richness, size and weight to the big-bodied and very serious flavors that...
(93-95 points) Clear bright medium deep red purple. This has sheer class written all over it. Half whole cluster, entirely in the old vines and a third in the young. Sweetly ripe damson fruit with a velvet texture. Really...
91+ The old vine bottling of Pimentiers (eighty-nine years of age in 2018) is deeper and more structured than the Cuvée Reine Joly, but this is not atypical by any means, as this is always built like a fine premier cru...
(91-93 points) Glowing bright purple. This has a superb nose with vivid lively raspberry fruit, fresh, after which I am expecting good acidity and getting it. Classic balance here, really intense fruit without a sensation...
Forty-five year old vines that act like they are 80 years' old' is how Brian Sieve describes the vineyard that supplies the fruit for this pale, aromatic, low-yielding wine. With lots of clove and pepper spice from 100%...
Fragrant, this red is full of floral and exotic spice aromas. The silky texture envelops wild cherry and berry, sandalwood and mineral flavors. The firm tannins and vibrant acidity drive the long, expansive finish. Best...
Plenty of ripe fruit with round tannins and pretty raspberries, cherries and citrus fruit. Some creamy undertones. Extremely drinkable and enjoyable now, but better in 2023 and onwards.
Cherry, raspberry, floral, earth and spice flavors grab your attention here, supported by light, firm tannins. This has tension and grip on the lingering aftertaste. Best from 2023 through 2036. – BS
The 2018 Grand Liards is also outstanding, as these old vines also moderate crop levels year in and year out, so there was no issue with getting the tannins properly ripe before the sugars climbed out of control. The...
Absolutely bursting with blue and red fruits, the concentration is deceptive here, as it starts out juicy and full of air, but after a few minutes in the glass you start to feel the weight and the texture, and this turns...
This grows at the north end of Chambolle, below Bonnes Mares where it crosses into Morey-St-Denis. Farmed under biodynamics, aged in a 50-50 combination of used barrels and clay pots, it’s a wine that delivers...
(91-93 points) Bright lively purple, joyous fresh cherries, all the elegance this site can offer. Middle weight but supremely lively, fresh and very long.
Well marked by sweet oak, this red nonetheless offers ample black cherry, plum, earth and iron flavors that should emerge with bottle age. It also has a solid grip of tannins that curtail the finish for now. Best from...
(91-94 points) Once again there is liqueur-like character to the aromas of red cherry, passion fruit, spice and pretty floral elements. There is excellent volume to the caressing and palate coating flavors that are...
(91-93 points) Old vines. Medium deep pink purple. Fine nose with more muscle than Epenottes. Darker fruit, more muscle but the tannins are well integrated. Good length. And still pleasingly understated.
One of the best Côte de Beaune reds of the vintage. The four blocks that make up the blend of this justly celebrated Pommard Premier Cru red amount to 5.23ha and range in age between 36 and 100 years' old. Aged in one...
(92-94 points) The 2018 Chambolle-Musigny Vieilles Vignes comes from 60- to 80-year-old vines and is matured in 25% new oak. It has more refinement and delineation on the nose compared to the regular village cru, offering...
A rich red, this is saturated with black cherry, blackberry, violet, graphite, tobacco and oak spice aromas and flavors. It has a solid backing of bright acidity and meaty tannins, with a long and complex finish. Best...
(90-92 points) The 2018 Morey-Saint-Denis Très Girard is matured with 100% whole bunch and 40% new oak. The clean, precise bouquet unfolds nicely in the glass, the stem addition discreet and allowing the terroir to speak...
The 2018 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Hauts Doix is showing beautifully, unwinding in the glass with a deep bouquet of black raspberries, exotic spices, dried flowers and incense, mingled with carnal nuances of grilled...
