Milk chocolate and hints of toffee underneath the ripe plum fruit and spiced cherries. It’s medium-to full-bodied with firm yet very velvety tannins. Silky, caressing Unico. Long and supple, with beautiful balance. Tasted...

Wine & Spirits, June 2018

Unico’s vineyards are located just in front of the winery, on the other side of the N-122, the road that crosses east to west through Ribera del Duero. These vineyards face north, their soils rich in limestone, two...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, February 2023

The 2006 Único has always been a bit of a mystery to me, as I always felt it transcended the vintage character, and this magnum was not an exception. 2006 was very warm, but the wine remains fresh and has a moderate 14%...

This vintage's bouquet of raisin, flower and dust aromas is complex, requiring extended airing to fully reveal itself. Earthy berry and raisin flavors finish with prune and berry notes. It's a touch ripe and heavy owing...

A full-on hedonistic bomb of a wine, the 1991 Unico has just about everything you could want. Kirsch, mulled spices, blackberry liqueur, potpourri and loads of spice give way to a fully mature, full-bodied, elegant red...

Unico is Vega Sicilia’s flagship wine, made from varying proportions of Tempranillo and Cabernet Sauvignon. Each provides a differentiating factor that makes the wine great in every vintage.

Unico remains true to a clear and well-defined style, with an inimitable character, elegance, and strength. It has a unique and timeless quality that has elevated it among the aristocracy of the great classic wines. Infinitely complex, the wine is silky and elegant, with an aging capacity that only a handful of wines in the world can claim.

Vega Sicilia’s Único 2006 is the estate’s flagship red from Ribera del Duero, built on a traditional formula—mostly Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) with a small portion of Cabernet Sauvignon—and an uncommonly long maturation before release. Decanter notes that fruit comes “from vines averaging 35 years of age across 40 hectares,” and that Único undergoes “a minimum 10 year ageing process in both small and large American and French oak barrels, plus time in bottle.” The wine is typically released already shaped by years of élevage, but still structured for further cellaring.

The critical reception is strong across the board, with several excellent reviews. Wine & Spirits is particularly emphatic at 97 points, calling it “this Spanish classic,” and tying its structure to site: north-facing vineyards with “soils rich in limestone,” helping explain the “persistent tension of the tannins.” Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate (Luis Gutiérrez) also rates it highly at 96, remarking that “2006 was very warm, but the wine remains fresh and has a moderate 14% alcohol,” adding that the wine can seem to “transcend the vintage character.” He includes a production detail for large format: “2,552 magnums were filled in June 2012.”

In the glass, reviewers converge on a balance of ripe fruit, spice, and a polished, mineral-leaning frame. James Suckling (98 points) describes “milk chocolate and hints of toffee underneath the ripe plum fruit and spiced cherries,” with “firm yet very velvety tannins” and a “long and supple” finish. Wine Spectator (94) calls it “silky and dense,” with “focused flavors of currant, licorice, tobacco and mineral,” noting it is “not showy, but has depth.”

The vintage warmth shows most in Wine Enthusiast’s 96-point note, which finds it “a touch ripe and heavy,” but still recommends patience, saying it “will benefit from more time in the cellar.” Overall, Único 2006 reads as a deeply layered, carefully aged wine that combines immediate texture with clear long-term intent.
