The 2013 Krug Brut Millésime is just being released now at age thirteen. It was a cooler vintage, which has given rise to a beautifully unique expression of this bottling. The wine’s cépages in 2013 ended up being forty-one percent pinot noir, thirty-eight percent chardonnay and twenty-one percent pinot meunier. It was disgorged in February of 2024, after ten years aging sur latte and finished with a dosage of five grams per liter. The wine’s aromatic constellation is magical, wafting from the glass in a very complex blend of white peach, passion fruit, clementine, pâtissière, hazelnut, a complex foundation of chalky minerality, delicate floral tones of lilac and lavender, citrus zest and a whisper of oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and beautifully structured, with a rock solid core of fruit, great soil signature and grip, refined mousse, great focus and balance and a very long, youthful and complex finish. Though the 2013 vintage is considered a “chardonnay vintage” in Champagne, Krug’s 2013 is beautifully defined by its gorgeous pinot noir component at the present time. There is a cool fruit tone to the pinot noir here that suggests this is going to be a very long-lived Vintage Krug and this wine will probably be at its most dazzling at twenty-five to thirty-five years of age. A great, great wine.
