(95+ points) The Tenuta Sette Ponti 2019 Oreno celebrates the wine's 20th anniversary (1999-2019) with a special label and a heavy glass bottle. This blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot is beautifully...

Tenuta Sette Ponti sits in the land of Sangiovese and Chianti, not far from the historic town of Arezzo. The estate received its name from Antonio F. Moretti, who wanted to pay homage to the so-called Road Sette Ponti (Seven Bridges), which connects the banks of the River Arno between Florence and Arezzo.

Tenuta Sette Ponti holds 330 hectares of land, of which more than 50 are planted with vineyards—tended entirely without mechanization. Included are Sangiovese, but also some great "internationals", such as Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, and a small selection of other varieties. The soil composition has a heterogeneous structure, well combined between clay, sand, limestone, and typical Chianti stone Galestro.

The grapes undergo a “one by one” manual selection when they arrive in the cellars. An open vat fermentation is preferred along with a gentle pressing to get the best aroma from the grapes without bitterness or excessive drying.

The 2019 Sette Ponti Oreno Proprietary Red Wine is a distinctive blend from Tuscany, Italy. Produced by Sette Ponti, this red wine comprises Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Petit Verdot, and is bottled with a cork closure. With an alcohol content of 15.0%, this wine is noted for its rich composition and robust character.

James Suckling awarded this wine an impressive score of 99, highlighting its "fantastic aromas of blackberries, currants, minerals, violets, and graphite." He praises the wine's full-bodied nature, firm and silky tannins, and notes that it is "incredibly polished and intense, yet ever so refined and integrated." Suckling concludes that this is "one of the best modern-day Orenos so far," suggesting it will be at its best from 2025 onwards (jamessuckling.com, 7/3/2021).

Wine Spectator's review offers a score of 93, describing the 2019 Oreno as a "vibrant red" saturated with flavors of "black cherry, blackberry, iron, and underbrush." The tannins are noted to turn chewy on the finish, with a lingering note of bitter almond and a fresh aftertaste. The reviewer recommends consuming this wine from 2023 through 2036 (Wine Spectator, 12/22/2021).

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, with Monica Larner as the reviewer, gives the wine a score of 95, stating it celebrates "the wine's 20th anniversary (1999-2019) with a special label and a heavy glass bottle." Larner describes the blend as "beautifully ripe and generous with impeccable fruit throughout," showcasing broad aromas of black fruit, exotic spice, cured tobacco, and new leather. She notes the tannins are quite strong, leading to a brief moment of astringency on the close, and characterizes the wine as "thickly extracted" with a "compact and concentrated" structure (Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, 6/30/2022).

In summary, the 2019 Sette Ponti Oreno Proprietary Red Wine is a highly praised and robust Tuscan red blend, recommended for aging to achieve its full potential.
