Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, February 2024

The Ca' Marcanda 2021 Bolgheri Rosso Camarcanda is made with Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc in a supporting role. This a bold and beautifully concentrated wine with a brilliant character that is best described as...

Vinous, December 2024

The 2021 Camarcanda is a fabulous wine from the Gaja family, the best they have ever made at their Bolgheri property. The wines here have been through some ups and downs, but there seems to be greater focus over these...

Wine Spectator, October 2024

Pure and elegant, with saturated flavors of violet, black currant, blackberry, licorice and iron. This is so beautifully balanced that it feels almost seamless, even at this young stage, offering a sleek profile and...

Decanter, March 2026

2021 was a dry but relatively cool vintage in Bolgheri and there is a real precision to the fruit character here. Fresh, with notes of orange peel and rhubarb, moreish red fruit and bright acidity, it is framed by welcome...

Ca’Marcanda’s 2021 Camarcanda is the flagship red of the Gaja family’s Bolgheri estate on the Tuscan coast, a property founded in 1996 after Angelo Gaja looked beyond Barbaresco and the Langhe. The estate farms about 80 hectares in the Bolgheri DOC, and Camarcanda sits at the top of its lineup alongside Magari and the Famiglia Gaja bottling. In 2021, Camarcanda is built on Cabernet Sauvignon with Cabernet Franc in a supporting role; Decanter has noted that Merlot has been omitted since the hot 2015 vintage.

Critical reception for the 2021 is excellent across major publications. Wine Advocate rated it 97 points, calling it “bold and beautifully concentrated,” with “supple texture and deep richness.” Vinous also awarded 97 points and went further, describing it as “the best they have ever made at their Bolgheri property,” while emphasizing a style that is “silky, aromatic and wonderfully pure.” Wine Spectator matched those top marks at 97, praising a profile that is “pure and elegant,” with “saturated flavors of violet, black currant, blackberry, licorice and iron.” James Suckling was slightly more reserved at 94 points, describing the wine as “savory and juicy,” with currant, raspberry, and boysenberry aromas, and advising to “drink after 2027.”

The broader 2021 context in Bolgheri supports the wine’s poise: a dry, well-ventilated summer and late-season diurnal shifts helped preserve aromatic finesse, and the vintage is widely regarded as one of the zone’s strongest with clear aging potential. Wine Spectator suggests a long window, 2026–2045. Production is limited—2,500 cases made, with 333 cases imported to the U.S.—and the wine was bottled in July 2022.
