(95-97 points) The 2024 Esprit de Tablas is brooding and dark in the glass. It is still in its infantile state and still in tank, showing notes of Earl Grey, crushed violet, peppery blackberries and wet stone. This...

The 2024 Esprit de Tablas from Tablas Creek Vineyard arrives with an identity footnote: while the broader “Esprit de Beaucastel” naming is associated with the project’s roots, Tablas Creek’s current releases are labeled “Esprit de Tablas” (red) and “Esprit de Tablas Blanc” (white). The estate sits in Paso Robles’ Adelaida District, a limestone-rich, 270-acre property about 11 miles from the Pacific. Farming is a central part of the story here: Tablas Creek has been certified organic since 2003, adopted biodynamic practices over time, and achieved Regenerative Organic Certified status in 2020 (Gold level in 2022). The vineyard’s Rhône-variety focus traces back to Beaucastel cuttings imported from Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

Professional critical feedback for the 2024 red is notably strong, even at the preview stage. Vinous reviewer Eric Guido rates it “(95-97 points)” and calls it “brooding and dark in the glass,” with aromas and flavors that move from “Earl Grey” and “crushed violet” to “peppery blackberries and wet stone.” He highlights the wine’s feel as well as its flavor profile, describing “gorgeous textures, nearly velvety,” and “salty mineral tones elevated by a core of tantalizing acidity.” Guido’s conclusion is an excellent endorsement for collectors watching the vintage’s development: “This is an incredibly exciting preview of this young Esprit de Tablas.”

Vintage conditions, as described by the producer for the 2024 Esprit de Tablas Blanc, point to a compressed harvest largely finished by the second week of October, with yields about 20% below long-term averages after a warm July and above-average temperatures through October—conditions the winery links to “intense flavors and vibrancy.” For the 2024 white, Tablas Creek reports a 12.5% alcohol blend led by Roussanne (40%) and Grenache Blanc (26%), with 1,815 cases produced.
