Vega Sicilia’s Único Reserva Especial (2021 Release) is the estate’s distinctive non-vintage expression of its flagship Único, built by blending multiple mature vintages rather than releasing a single year. In this release, critics consistently report a three-vintage blend—2009, 2010 and 2011—based largely on Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) with a small portion of Cabernet Sauvignon. Luis Gutiérrez (Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate) frames it as “a tribute to the tradition and the past times,” designed to find “the balance and house style by blending different vintages of Único.” He also reports production details: “16,916 bottles and 257 magnums” and notes it “was bottled in June 2017.”

The tasting notes converge on a wine that combines concentration with polish. James Suckling’s excellent 98-point review highlights “plenty of blackberry, chocolate, toasted-oak, cedar and hazelnut aromas,” followed by a “full body with firm, velvety tannins,” and a finish marked by “hazelnut, walnut and almond undertones,” concluding that it is “Glorious now.” Vinous reviewer Josh Raynolds (96 points) emphasizes a darker, more savory register, describing “dark fruit and floral qualities… exotic spices, vanilla, pipe tobacco and cedary oak,” and a palate that “stains” with “smoke-tinged cherry liqueur, cassis, fruitcake and candied licorice,” carried by “a spine of juicy acidity.”

In terms of structure and evolution, Raynolds notes it is “leading with its structured, 2010 component right now,” and suggests a drinking window of 2024–2036. Gutiérrez (95 points) finds “many similarities with the 2011,” while also observing “a little more development in the aromas,” a “powerful palate,” and a dry finish “with some tannins.” Overall, the strongest reviews point to depth, length, and a tightly built, cellar-worthy Reserva Especial that is already showing well.
