Montepeloso’s 2018 Eneo is the estate’s flagship red under Costa Toscana IGT, made in the coastal hills of Suvereto, where warm days are tempered by maritime breezes. The blend is firmly rooted in Italian varieties—55% Sangiovese, 25% Montepulciano, 15% Alicante and 5% Malvasia Nera—and comes in at about 15% alcohol. Production is relatively modest for a top cuvée at about 34,000 bottles.

In the glass, Eneo reads as a ripe, modern coastal Tuscan red, but its construction aims for balance rather than heavy-handed oak. The wine is matured about 15–18 months in used French barriques (no new oak), then further bottle-aged before release, a regimen that typically emphasizes fruit and structure over overt wood sweetness.

The strongest critical endorsement comes from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, where Monica Larner awards an excellent 94 points and calls it “a well-priced wine…worth seeking out.” She notes “a beautifully saturated color with thickness, fruity richness and nicely integrated tannins,” while also finding that the blend isn’t always easy to parse: “It’s a bit harder to dissect the various components,” she writes, though “that solo voice of Sangiovese does emerge with wild plum, potting earth and blue lilac,” alongside “an extra point of acidity” that recalls Sangiovese’s profile.

James Suckling rates it 92 points and frames the wine in similarly generous terms, describing “a rich, layered red with lots of dark fruit, such as black cherries, ripe plums,” plus “walnuts and chocolate.” He adds that the palate is “full and layered with integrated tannins and a flavorful finish,” recommending it as “drinkable now, but better after 2021.”

Overall, the 2018 Eneo offers dark-fruited ripeness, clear Tuscan character, and a polished, integrated feel, with enough freshness and savory detail to keep the wine moving.
